Waking up early on a Saturday morning would seem like a drag after a long week of school. For me, waking up early on Saturday morning has allowed me to explore one of my future career interest while still being able to help in the community. This summer, I began to volunteer in the emergency room at McLaren Macomb Hospital. I help with visitor check in and try to make visitors’ and patients’ stays as comfortable as possible. There is always something going on in the emergency room, and it is nice to know that I can help make a difference during a very stressful time for some people. Although I was only able to start at the end of last summer, I look forward to continuing my volunteer services and exploring different parts of the hospital and

Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

There is an interesting expression in Asia called a “self-role-played idiot,” which is used to point some people who imagine themselves are in the animation or they are the protagonists in their own world. However, not every dissociative thinking is enjoyable, instead, people may experience the difficult situations that they have to dissociate themselves in order to overcome the painful memories. Martha Stout discussed two of her patients, in her article “When I Woke Up on Tuesday, it is Friday,” they have experienced the overwhelming pains than they can bear for, such as one for the patients is extremely fearful for her stepfather because she had been abused by him in her childhood. Stout also explained the definition of the dissociation,…

There’s always that one friend who has theories on any topic you could think of. Sometimes he says something that actually makes sense, something that is so nonsensical that it makes perfect sense at that moment he is “woke.” “Woke” used to be a meaningful word, it described celebrities who used their fame to highlight social issues. The people who work against the pipeline from poor schools to prison were “woke.” Then, the word began to lose its meaning quickly as more and more people used it to describe anything that was slightly clever and now it is used by any average Joe to refer to any random thought that required more than half a neuron create in their brain.…

November 11, 1993 –a date typically dissociated with the remembrance of America’s involvement in Vietnam. On this day, the female Vietnam Veteran memorial was dedicated in honor of unspoken heroes, ones whose experiences are unparalleled to the soldiers who partook in the physical fight and incomprehensible to the public’s mind. These brave women, some married, engaged, or mothers, held the burden of a war with undefined intentions both physically and mentally, during combat and upon returning home. Although they played a role in a new kind of warfare, felt the personal sting of the anti-war movement, and suffered from PTSD much like their male counterparts, there was little research done on the nurses and nearly no recognition granted for nearly twenty years.…

“Strive for excellence!”, “Keep pushing yourself to the best of your ability.” , and “Have heart.” These are just a few of the many words of encouragement my dad would tell me as I grew up. At the time, I thought he was only referring to the sports I was playing. Whether it was gymnastics, softball, basketball, or volleyball, he was always pushing me to be the best I could be. I never dreamed these words would mean so much to me and ensue me to aspire my accomplishments thus far and the accomplishments I strive for in the future.…

On a beautiful Wednesday afternoon after school, I was able to take a peek into my future. I have always been excited to become a nurse since I decided that this will be my major, and on that Wednesday I was able to experience this first hand. At my mother’s work, Behavioral Healthcare Partners, I was lucky enough to be sent to work in their medical office. Not only did I have an unbelieveable mixture of nerves and excitement during this experience, but I also learned a lot my first, second, and third day here working in the medical department. I felt my heart racing as I entered the medical building at Behavioral Healthcare Partners as I was about to see what the rest of my life may be centered around.…

I feel that I can make a difference in each patient’s life that I encounter, it might be as small as getting a wheelchair if they seem flaccid or weak, a blanket if they are cold, something to drink or just talking to a patient to get their mind off pre-surgery. I look forward to volunteering each week. The most rewarding day by far was being able to witness a nurse giving CPR to a child choking. She saved his life. I would want to someday be able to be able to save a life, not for the recognition but because I want to make a difference.…
