My vignette connects to Amy Tan’s Joy Luck Club in a variety of ways. In the short story Waiting Between the Trees, Ying-Ying was raised in a rather wealthy environment, and when she takes one of her jade jars outside to play with, she gets it muddy. In my vignette, Beckie is a lonesome girl who is judged by others because of her looks and her wealth, but little do they know how isolated she is on the inside. Also, Ying-Ying travels to the countryside after her tragic but necessary abortion, which relates to my vignette because when Beckie feels lonely she walks to the river to watch the sunset.
