In the book Wait for Me by An Na, the main character Mina lives a life of lies, for she has been lying to her mom for years about school. Her mother is also very strict and has raised her trying to make her think that she needs to be the best at everything, especially school. This shows that a person's background can affect who they are as a person, but the person is the one who has to decide how their life is going to be. In Wait for Me two major issues stand out and that is how strict parenting can affect a teen, and how lying can manipulate a person and mess with their mind. Greenwood also says that strict parenting can cause children to become “excellent liars”, which is exactly what Mina is because she doesn’t want to disappoint her mom but she is so caught up in her lies that it’s getting to her head. Children react differently to strict parenting, for example Mina’s sister doesn’t mind but she also doesn’t have such high expectations and standards to meet up to like her older sister. Some teens react well to strict parenting and end up becoming great people, opposed to some teens who dislike not having much freedom and have to meet certain expectations. Pathological liars get in a place where if they told the truth everyone would find out that they lied and the liar would lose a lot of people because they have lied to so many. This pathological liar also comes from a very bad background, their mom isn’t supportive and didn’t pay very much attention to her children and neglected to make them feel loved. This real-life experience relates to Wait for Me because it shows how lying can really mess with someone and force them to live with guilt, just like Mina is. It also shows how lying can not only affect you but the people around you, making them believe that you are someone you really aren’t, or if they find out they you’re a liar, they won’t trust you and will most likely lose respect for you. This also proves that lying is something that messes with your head and you have to be the one to choose if you are going to be a liar or trustworthy, because that's what's going to give you a good or bad image to other
