Wahconah Regional High School Case Study

Decent Essays
Thirty years ago, students attending Wahconah Regional High School had a different experience as they went through their normal activities of the year. For example, if a student were to play two sports throughout the course of an academic year, they did not have to pay a sports fee (today that fee is
$100).
Why is that?
The answer is simple. Funding is different because the tax system imposed on the seven surrounding towns. Funding from the state varies from year to year. The student population is constantly changing, with parents leaving the county for jobs. Additionally, students of that time realized the value in working together as a class. They understood community. Students were not afraid to fundraise or share money amongst their classes.

John R. Thelin, a professor at the University of Kentucky, wrote an article for Time.com titled “Here’s Why We Shouldn’t Pay College Athletes”. Throughout the article, Thelin refers to athletes strictly a part of college men’s football and basketball and explains why replacing a full-ride scholarship which amounts to 65,000 dollars with a 100,000-dollar salary does not make sense economically. Thelin also highlights the difference in state taxes which may make some colleges more appealing than others due to the benefits of keeping more of the theoretical 100,000-dollar salary. I believe that Thelin in his article is making a valid point that students should not be paid as employees of the university in which they attend, and that a 100,000-dollar scholarship should not replace a full-ride scholarship. However, in this article, Thelin is putting the readers under the impression that all college athletes are under full-ride scholarships.…

PAYING COLLEGIATE STUDENT ATHLETES 5 football and men’s basketball players would leave college early to play professionally. As Senator Chambers later noted in his speech, many collegiate athletes come from low income backgrounds and athletics is their way out. One of the biggest reasons student athletes leave for the NBA or NFL before their eligibility expires is because they will be paid. By providing them with financial assistance, even if it is set aside in a trust fund, it may make a difference for student athletes who are on the fence about ending their education early. Issues with the NCAA also arise when considering that in 2013, the NCAA’s management and general spending grew by 9% while the distribution to Division 1 members only…

At Rose City High School, much of what Ms. Enriquez does involves assessment with students and at times intervention, but mostly assessment. In terms of assessment, she said there isn’t any specific person that determines the need for a student to be assessed but rather anyone could request it. Depending on the student’s needs, she begins with different comprehensive assessments, ones that focus on socialization and communication, and if required, she’ll have the school nurse there for developmental assessment. Since assessments can differ, there will at times be different colleagues that may partake in an assessment such as a Special Education Teacher, or a school nurse, or sometimes a speech therapist, depending on what the student requires.…

To sum it all up, we as students need to stand up and petition the Clayton County Board of Education to renovate our school. We as students don't want our school looking a billion years old. All of the other high schools that we visit for games and competitions have nice schools that are pleasant to the eyes such as Drew High School, Mundy's Mill High School, and more. When other high schools come to play at games or competitions at our school we don't want to show them the messed up bathrooms, food on the floor and writing on the walls. How would it feel if you came back to this school for your high school reunion and it looked the exact same from when you left?(Rhetorical Question)…

I completed my cross-district visit at Park Intermediate School, in Southwestern with Mrs. DiPietro. As soon as I pulled into the school parking lot, I knew it was going to be completely different from my FEEP school. The building from the outside was much larger and looked a lot nicer. Once I walked inside, everything was clean and it looked like a brand new school compared to Hamilton Elementary School. When I walked into Mrs. DiPietro’s sixth-grade literature classroom, I noticed how everything was much more organized and she had about 20 students in her room.…
