Beyond the Silver Lining Lehigh University: a private, relatively small school, rich in tradition and ancestry. While walking on campus, there is a strong sense of community and unity. Every student, both undergraduate and graduate, is here to improve their education and experience all that Lehigh has to offer. While nearly all Lehigh students would agree to those facts, I would also coincide by saying Lehigh is an institution like no other. However, with all of these positive reflections, there are some negatives that fail to get mentioned.…

These past few years, I have further refined my critical thinking skills when approaching nursing education and its processes while addressing the most critical issues, and increasing the number of students enrolled in a program. To bring this about, I had to prove myself, not only in my clinical acumen, but also in my verbal and written skills, team building ability and willingness to be an advocate for all students, prospective and current, as well as identifying and recruiting for nursing programs. What is more, these skills have increased my quantitative and statistical ability, skills that will prove invaluable in my doctoral research, not to mention the responsibility of educating nursing students. The students that will go forth and provide optimal care to the nation’s…

As I came to college, my family and I anticipated I would be following a simple mold of a conscientious student. One that is highly focused in some limited number of long term goals. Don 't get me wrong, this only meant that I had high expectations out of my college education. For some people, this path leads them to great success. But, I slowly realized my vision of success needed to have stories from different roads and bridges, than just one simple path.…

I want to become a physician-scientist because I want to work at the interface between basic science research, which has the power to elucidate new knowledge, and clinical medicine, which has the ability to translate scientific discoveries to a deliverable form that can directly help the patients in need. For three years, I studied the role of tumor microenvironment on breast cancer metastasis in Dr. Semenza’s laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As I studied the role of Hypoxia-inducible factor on integrin expression and subsequent cell motility, I learnt that cancer is a multi-faceted disease that consists of a web of multiple biological mechanisms as well as other arenas of science. Having exposed myself to…
