Wage Gap Reflection

This week’s readings were focused on the financial status of women. I really appreciated these as they introduced me to many things I had never really thought about. Obviously, I had heard about the wage gap and the disparities between white women and women of color even within that issue. One thing I had never heard or thought of was that women may need for retirement because they typically live longer, which once brought to my attention of course made total sense. Another thing that was new to me was that businesses run by women and minorities don’t get the same benefits as businesses run by white males. That just astonished me, again after reading it, it made sense but I would never have considered that before. The final thing that caught

The Wage Gap: Sports Edition The U.S. women’s national soccer team has a radiant, ambitious history. Over three decades, it has traveled from non-existent to the top of the soccer world. Executive Summary Female students at Rutgers University often are neglected when looking for an open community of women to reach out or relate to. All women face problems such as the gender pay gap, student loans, reproductive rights, violence against women, LGBTQ rights, and women in leadership. These hardships are often looked over or silenced among society. Some assume, for example, that the pay gap exists because women choose to have lower-paying jobs.…

However, not only is the wage gap the issue within societies, but also the prevalent problem of race. One does not even have to wander far from first-world countries to witness the injustices in regards to the wellness of the community in terms of health. They can be found right here in the Land of the Free, the United States of America. Where the very fundamental principle of a country is equality including equal opportunities, the United States does not extend its caring arms far enough for the impoverished when their health is on the line. With 88% of white Americans being under the umbrella of health care, minorities including Hispanics, African-Americans, Asians, and Native Americans’ percentages range from 68% to 82% (Fact Sheet: Health…

Hilary Clinton once said, “last time I checked, there’s no discount for being a woman. Groceries don’t cost us less”. This statement is true. Something that is also true is the fact that the gender wage gap is not based on discrimination and is something that is directly influenced by the worker as a person: not as a gender. This lie has been spread around quite a bit lately, partly due to the recent presidential election, and it is just one of those things that is heard so many times that what was fallacy turns into fact.…

When arguing a certain position context can be as important as facts and statistics. Without providing contextual evidence for the facts that contribute to the gender based wage gap an uninformed conception of the issue becomes accepted as fact. Instead of arguing about the institutional manufacturing of the wage gap people should logically inspect the many factors that make this such a complex issue before deciding their own opinion. The wage gap is an undeniable truth, but it is a misrepresented…

While working a minimum wage job in Seattle the summer prior to enrolling at the Evans School, I gained a unique perspective and developed an acute interest in understanding the potential impacts of implementing this policy during a critical time of transition for organizations facing wage hikes. In my department, for example, some almost-immediate changes after the passage of the minimum wage hike exposed loopholes in existing workforce policies intended to benefit low-wage workers, which manifested in the increased hiring of "temporary” employees. This seemingly insignificant title distinction allowed the organization to circumvent state regulations requiring them to pay for employee benefits, including healthcare, after a certain number…

A Lopsided Fortune Scale: Annotated Bibliography of the Gender Wage Gap Fixing a societal mentality can be difficult to change. Therefore, narrowing the gender wage gap can be quite challenging to achieve. When topics, such as the benefits men have over women, are mentioned, gender discrimination fills the minds of the population. This occurs because people take into consideration the fact that the gender wage gap occurs in every state, happens in nearly every occupation, affects all levels of education and race, and grows with age. As of today, women make up 47 percent of workers, they receive more college and advanced degrees than men, yet on average, still make less than men do (Lukas).…

Men earn more money than women—or do they? This statement depends completely upon how one reads and evaluates the information and facts. Years ago, the earth was thought to be flat. As for this week’s reading assignments, I was introduced to two pieces of readings: Judith Lorber’s “Night to His Day,” and Cherrie Moraga’s “La Guera.” Having read and thinking about the issues of the readings, I was aware of the process that the society has used to construct gender over the years (in “Night to His Day”) and how mistreatment, like racial discrimination or gender inequality, is involved in the construction of gender (in “La Guera”). Let’s talk about Lorber’s article. As I read, I noticed what the author indicates: “For individuals, gender means sameness,” and “for society, gender means difference;” I believed that it was true. From my perspective, each individual in this society complies with his [or her] group’s expectations…

The gap between the rich and poor has been a problem since the late 20th century, but has become an even greater issue in the past couple of years. Currently, the top 1% of the richest people in the world own about 48 percent of the world’s capital. Economists predict that by the year of 2016, the top 1 percent will own more that the rest of the remaining 99 percent combined combined (Karimi). As an effort to reduce this enormous gap, some states have taken the initiative to impose a minimum wage higher than the federal minimum wage, varying from $9 to even up to $15. The reasoning behind these measures is that an increase in the minimum wage will increase the wealth of the poor while decreasing the profits of the firms hence decreasing their…

While many might argue that discrimination against women has dissipated over the past fifty years, it still plays a role in the gender wage gap. We can still see hints of discrimination as we listen to politicians’ debate about whether or not a woman can be an effective President of the United States. In addition to discrimination, gender roles and domestic responsibilities have had significant influence on the gender wage gap. Domestic duties are still largely handled by women making them more likely than men to leave the workplace when domestic issues arise. Because of this, women may be seen as less valuable than men and if a women needs to take maternity leave or request time off to care for sick children, she may be considered a threat to long term productivity (Magnusson, 2010).…
