When the Sixers established an impenetrable shield around the gate, most gunters are discouraged. “An air of hopelessness quickly swept the guter community.” (Cline, 266). However, Parzival responds confidently to the force field, saying “Like any classic video game, the Hunt had simply reached a new, more difficult level.” (Cline, 266) This proves that Wade’s passion for th Hunt keeps him going. Another factor that contributed to Wade’s determination was his success in finding the Crystal key and his return to first place on the Scoreboard (Cline, 164). When Parzival “dethroned’ (Cline, 210), or removed from first place, he became angry at himself and promised to find the key. “Now.. get your head back in the game, moron. Wade used an IOI access code he purchased in an auction to change Bryce’s financial situation (Cline, 288). He makes it seem as if Bryce owes money to IOI. As a result, the company send its corporate police to force Bryce into indentured servitude (Cline, 269). As bryce is taken by IOI, he essentially loses his basic rights and freedoms. “I was company property. A human resource.” (Cline, 274). The debtors to IOI are treated objects. “The dropcops were like garbage collectors, doing their daily jobs.” (Cline, 274). The fact that the narrator is referring to them as garbage indicates the little value that they have. This description provides a tragic image, one that shows the suffering of humanity. In addition, the author provides a description of the outside world. “Even the snow was dirty.” (Cline, 276). Wade indicates that the planet is dying due to the lack of care for the environment. Lso, Wade says “The number of homeless people seemed to have increased drastically.” (Cline, 276). This shows another sign of humans suffering. Overall, the author’s description of the world highlights it issues and makes it seem as if humanity is nearing the
