Complications rise any given chance in this movie, but Watney does not let those problems obscure his mind. Watney knows his main objective is to survive and the chance of him going back home is slim. However, Watney tackles every problem with humoristic optimism. With this, he is able to exploit his mind. However, Mark Watney is not the first person on Mars. He is part of a group that is the third crew to explore Mars. The physical setting of the book influenced the character greatly, due to the fact that the physical setting was all he had to survive with. With Martian soil, Watney creates a potato farm, and with his engineering skills he creates water by literately combining oxygen and hydrogen (almost killing himself in the process). The climate of Mars has an effect on Watney as well.…

At one point in the story line, right after NASA figures out he’s alive and start to plan out a way to rescue him, Watney logs: “Even if I find a way to tell NASA I’m alive, there’s no guarantee they’ll be able to save me” (Weir 65). At this time in the book, the reader knows that NASA has discovered that Watney is alive, but Watney thinks that they still presume him to be a dead man. At another point in the plot, both the reader and NASA know that Watney is headed into a storm, but Watney is, yet again, oblivious. “There was a haze in the air. 1. For some doing wrong is a sense of pleasure, rather than doing the right thing. Some people find life better to do others wrong rather than being a victim of someone who has done them wrong. Glucson makes things clear when he states that “those who practice justice do so involuntarily and because they have not the power to be unjust will best appear if we imagine something of this kind”. In other words, to my understanding he is making it clear that those who practice justice have come to an agreement for those who do things justice vs others who do wrong-doings.…

Throughout the whole trip on Mars, Watney remained happy (most of the time) and never got down on himself even if he was in the worst situations. For example, in the book when one of the HAB ( the house that NASA sent for the crew to live in) walls gets blown up, Mark doesn’t get upset instead he makes a joke about it when he is in the process of fixing it. “ ‘Yes, of course duct tape works… Duct tape is magic and should be worshipped.’” (220) This text evidence is just one example of how Mark adds humor to tough situation. His humorous personality helped him to survive on the red planet of Mars because Mark could always crack a joke even in the worst…
