For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to attend North Dakota State University. My dad and sister are NDSU alumni, so furthering my education where they did provides us with a unique bond. Additionally, not many of my relatives attended college, allowing me to see the difficulties in providing for oneself and family without a college degree. Although I know the next seven years are going to be challenging, extremely strenuous, and will push me to the edge of my comfort zone, the satisfaction of administering medical services to those who need them will make it worthwhile. Not only will I be able to care for others with a Pharm.…

I developed a particular passion for rural healthcare during the clinical rotations for my Bachelor of Medicine in China. I got to know people from other parts of the country who did not get the same healthcare that I received living in the capital area. The first death I witnessed was a patient who had primary hepatocellular carcinoma induced by chronic Hepatitis B infection. That patient was from a rural area with no perinatal transmission prevention program. Later on, due to improper monitoring and medication, the patient’s health declined rapidly.…

My pursuit of a medical degree is greatly strengthened by the Columbia University Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP). Prior to matriculation from the program my source of motivation held no true direction, I wanted to simply “help people”. During SPHSP I was exposed to federally qualified health centers (FQHC) and my eyes were opened to new medium to help people. I admired the measures that FQHC put in place to effectively serve a population of people that, under normal circumstances, would not be able pursue healthcare. FQHCs aligned closely to the sense of equity that I began to develop as I was exposed to communities suffering from health disparities over the course of the internship.…

During Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, I overhear many different kinds of conversations from my cousins, most of whom are practicing physicians. They talk about their kids’ performance in school, celebrities, daily life, new gadgets and the like. Then, there are the conversations about the practice of medicine: different surgical procedures, global healthcare, rare health conditions, electronic health records, daily life in the clinic and the challenges they face as physicians. I particularly like to tune in when those conversations come up, mainly because they give me some insight into the practice of medicine from people with a similar cultural background to me.…

As a resident of Georgia, I have always considered Emory in the horizon of my “backyard”. a. Throughout my career as a pharmacy technician, I was exposed to a diverse clientele; farmers, scholar, dispossessed, retired and everything in between. When I began, I was shy and struggled to socialize with others, especially those who I viewed as different. Each day work required me to interact with new people, breaking the boarders of my comfort zone. As a result, I came to the realization that our differences gave us a spectrum of perspectives. Diversity is the product of the subtle differences in personalities, views, and life experience.…

I have observed the various ways physicians interact with their patients and staff in the times that I’ve volunteered and shadowed Dr. Layth. With these qualities, I am determined to contribute towards the growth of my colleagues and AZCOM as a whole. I will bring forth a deep desire to learn, an enduring will, and a humble, team-oriented attitude towards my colleagues.
