WRTG101 Reflective Report

It is hard to believe that this class will soon be coming to an end. This class while a core requirement for University of Maryland University College (UMUC) was chosen to help prepare me and introduce me into a better understanding of grammar and the mechanics of writing. In the beginning of this class (WRTG101) I had very marginal writing skills and experience, now with acquisition of skills that I have gained through this course any writing task set before me can be completed with the upmost of confidence. With this in mind the following reflective essay is an opportunity for me to discuss what skills I learned, how I received them, and lastly why there are needed. Up to the present time a skill that I have been critiqued on multiple times by the professor was word count. In the website Writers’ Treasure author Idrees Patel explains the importance of word count and how it select your readers. For example, if you write a novel and it is long, about 100,000 words long, then naturally there will be some readers to whom it is not suitable (just because of the word count). Readers’ examples include children who are interested in the novel itself but can’t read due to the high word count. If your novel appears too …show more content…
That helped more than I thought it would. I used some of the strategies though out the whole semester. When it came to reading and going over the material, I would write some of it down to go back and reread if I needed to. I would also read it out loud it seemed to help. I also found I used some of the prewriting strategies a lot too. One of my favorite ones was freewriting, it helped a lot to be able to write everything out by hand and go from there. I would just write but it didn’t always work out, sometimes it would make much since so I would have to start over, but it was still one of my favorite ways to go. I also tried using brainstorming, but it didn’t work as well as free

Since the beginning of my first year at school I have been learning to read and write. Throughout these years I have had a lot of experiences with reading and writing. All through high school we would write responses and essays over books we read. Once I entered college everything changed; I began to learn about writers and people who were known because of their great works of literature. In college, you are held to a higher standard and responsibility than you are in high school; this challenge has encouraged me to work hard and because of this I have become better at writing.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

When I considered taking WRTG 101 this semester I was unsure how much it would affect my writing style. I have always had issues with the strength of my writing and my overall writing style. Whether it was run on sentences, proper citations, an overall passive writing style, or proper use of pronouns my writing style needed a tune up. After taking this class I have an improved overall understanding of the writing process and how to apply it in different writing situations. Run on Sentences were a concern before I took the class, however now I have a much better understanding of proper sentence structures.…

Twelve weeks later, my first college writing course completed, and to my pleasant almost surprise, I feel as though I have bettered myself in writing. If you look back at my Mid-term Reflection, walking into my first undergraduate writing class was a little unsettling. Was I going to be totally on top of everything the professor threw at us students or was I going to be completely unprepared? Rhetoric and Composition 103 was neither one nor the other, but a writing class that took what I knew and what I did not to create a well-rounded writer. By the time Mid-term’s rolled around, I could already see a change in my skills as a writer.…

In this reflective final essay I will reflect on my experience through my semester in English 125. My professor for this class is Dr. Theresa Rooney, two positives characteristics that I found in her is that she is a caring person, she care about our grades, she constantly gave us feedbacks in our assignments. Another positive characteristic that describe her is that she is really responsible with the material that she gave us in class, she is always on top of the assignments making sure that everybody did it and that nobody missed it. The purpose of this reflective essay is to demonstrate how much my writing is being improved in the semester of the spring 2016 year in English 125 class. Through this semester we learn main keys to writing clear and rational, some of the learning objectives in this class were: read and listen critically and analytically, writing clearly and coherently in varied, academic formats such formal essay and research papers, demonstrate research skills using appropriate technology, support a thesis with well reasoned arguments, and formulate original ideas and relate them to the ideas of others by employing the conventions of ethical attribution and citation.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

Spending the semester, Fall 2014, in the English Composition course, enables one to experience communication among the classmates of various backgrounds that have various perceptions on different issues. Peers were able to critique each other on specific areas which directed one when editing and writing future essays. Also, class discussion enabled one to think on a broader basis and view issues from various perspectives. Writing journals acted as reinforcement, in that it keeps one up to par with practicing to express one’s self using the English language regularly. Section ONE • Students will practice grammar skills and the teaching of grammar Throughout discussions in class and reading our textbook, Grammar to Enrich and Enhance Writing, the most useful and reoccurring theme was that “teaching grammar in isolation from writing – that is teaching the grammar book instead of helping writers write – has been found again and again to have little if any positive effects on most students writing” (Weaver, 261). It is important that we as educators see the trends of teachers failing to deviate from the somewhat ineffective way in which they were taught, and break them by specializing our curriculum to our individual students. When teaching out classes, we have to take a step back and insure that we are teaching…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
