It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

Partners Mentoring Youth was founded in 1978 as Larimer County Partners, Inc. in response to a need that was lacking in northern Colorado. Community leaders in the 1970's saw a dramatic increase in the number of youth offending, entering the Juvenile Justice system and then re-offending. The District Attorney, Mayor and other business and community leaders, seeking ways to help these youth, found the Partners model being used effectively in Denver as a youth-mentoring program. We have since changed our name to Partners Mentoring Youth and are an affiliate in the statewide Partners Mentoring Association (PMA).…

I am an Assistant Tutor Coordinator and Learning Specialist for Tulane University’s Academic Services Center for Student-Athletes (ASC). Previously, I provided support as a Mentor for North Carolina State University’s Academic Support Program for Student Athletes (ASPSA). Furthermore, my professional experience as a Lead Counselor at the Emily Krzyzewski Center, and AmeriCorps member for the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative and the Durham Literacy Center, respectively, has allowed me the opportunity to work with diverse and often underrepresented populations in a variety of settings. These positions have given me insight into the concerns of the modern traditional college student. As a National Board Certified Counselor, a graduate from a Counsel…

Boys and Girls club History & Funds On a national level, the history of the Boys and Girls Club began a city in Hartford, Connecticut. Three women came together and they believed that youth, specifically boys at this time, ultimately needed a “positive alternative” to walking around the streets. Stakeholder needs and expectations not only directly influence learning goals, but also indirectly influence learning goals through the mission. AACSB requires input from various stakeholders when developing the mission; therefore, stakeholder needs (such as desired managerial competencies) will directly influence the mission and, in turn, indirectly influence learning goals. Learning goals are supposed to directly influence curricula. They have the strategic purpose of connecting elements of a school’s mission to its programmatic curricula content (Christensen, Judd, & Nichols, 2010; Legorreta, Kelley, & Sablynski, 2006; Martell, 2007; Stivers & Phillips, 2009). In both training and educational settings, the objective (or learning goal) is…

Setting goals for my children and meeting those goals will not be an easy task because many children learn at different rates, but I will have multiple strategies to help achieve all three of my goals so that way when my children leave my class, they will all be on the same page. My goals in my classroom are for my students to be respectful, have self-confidence, and be independent. Moral autonomy will be my number one goal of guidance because it goes along with my three goals that I already have set, being respectful, having self-confidence, and responsibility in the classroom. Children will learn how to have responsibilities through being independent and showing them that they can do a task on their own and efficiently. This goes along with Erikson’s theory and my belief that children learn best through being independent and having responsibilities in the classroom.…
