WIU Reflection

As a student at Western Illinois University, I didn’t know how I was going to be able to get involved with a lot. I just figured that I would maintain my grades and get involved with an organization the following semester. However, I dawned on me that I was not getting the full WIU experience just only focusing on my studies. I felt it was time to embrace the WIU organizations offered on campus. During this time, I made myself acclimated with going to the Black Student Association. I was just a regular member that at the time, but it was good that had joined an organization on campus. To be officially in the org I had to at least attend eight meeting every Monday at 4:30pm. This was functional for me because I had enough time to get myself …show more content…
This was the time for me to start to get my things together and actually take the organization seriously. I had always felt I should be doing more than just coming to the meetings. I actually wanted to serve a true purpose to the community of B.S.A. The president of B.S.A had mentioned that the human relation chair was an open position. Human Relation duties were to get more involved with knowing the students and understanding their needs and wants. In my eyes, the human relation was the middle-man between the students and the organization's leaders. I felt this was the best opportunity to get my name known on campus. It was my time to be popular while also influencing the …show more content…
I began to understand my true role for the organization and why I was put in my position. This made me understand why the organization was in existence. My role was to adapt to the student body and push for positivity. I was there to help develop students to understand their goals and focus on accomplishing those goals. My role also was to bring awareness to the masses about political and social problems. I’m to serve the community in a positive way. Since being in the org, I have made my way to do my duty efficiently and effectively. I help start a “Black Lives Matter” movement on campus to make students aware of police brutality. I’m also in work for making people conscious about gun violence that is taking place in the city of Chicago. I have met with many students getting to know them at a personal

Almost four years ago, I entered Clackamas High School as a confused, shy, awkward freshman. Soon after entering the hallways of this school, I was assigned to a Freshman Assurance group and met with the group leaders. My group leaders were vivacious seniors, who were condescending and gave very little advice on high school. I felt a little intimidated by them, and the activities that they led made most of the freshmen in our group uncomfortable. They told us about their craziest stories and about the teachers who weren't of the most pleasant experience.…

There was never a dull moment due to the wide range of diversity, talent, and personalities of students. I made amazing lifelong friends that appreciated my presence, ideas, and personality. The entire student body participated in deep discussions over a wide range of topics including beliefs, injustice, and conflicts in our society. Everyone treated other’s contributions with respect and consideration of their ideas and views. Each discussion and activity opened my eyes to recognize meaningful things that society normally overlooked.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

“My Day at the FGCU Campus” Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) offers many things besides just schooling. They offer a sustainable way of life and allow its students to become one with nature. Some highlights within the campus are a wide variety of ecosystems including the Food Forest, nature trails, and lakes. My favorite sustainable feature that FGCU offers is the Food Forest.…

When I started attending Northern Virginia Community College, I joined the Black Student Alliance(BSA). My perception of this club had nothing to do with reality. I thought it was a club made to bring awareness of what is happening in the world in general and in the black community in particular. Unfortunately, it was more about personal issues they were facing and making friends. The semester after, I applied to be a board member.…

Leadership is imperative to supporting the foundation of succession in our society. It is important that we exercise our God given right to utilize our sphere of influence to the best of our abilities. Although leadership may gain you more recognition throughout society it is not about the affluence one can acquire; leading is solely about guiding others down a path of success so that future generations can more easily learn from our mistakes to pass down to the next generation. That is why I believe mentoring and any position of leadership should be central to young adults to set the example for the impactful youth. I found my sphere of influence to be within the academic driven chapter of the National Honor Society which in my senior year I was elected president.…

I hope to help more students be open to the countless opportunities that the SMU black student body has to offer. As a black student at SMU everything we do is a reflection of the black community as a whole. I say this because many of our counterparts have had very little interaction with black people or have a skewed perception of us as a whole. If appointed I would use this platform to help foster relations between the majority student body of SMU and the black community. I would actively participate in events around campus in order to show that we are present and energetic.…

The work of the first organization was primarily educational. I was responsible for organizing all public events on campus. As president of the religious group, my responsibilities were to make sure that the needs of each individual in the community were met. Both of these leadership opportunities taught me a great deal. I learned about the value of teamwork, and the importance of delegating responsibility, not just to ease my own burden, but also to help create a sense of commitment, responsibility, and ownership among group members.…

Thank you for your comments and kind words. Reading your post made me think of I learned, researched and discussed in MY educational journey at GCU. I learned in a previous module discussion on developing lesson plans the importance of taking a student’s background on subject is important. In our discussion this week on assessments, especially after reading the story of Dr. Quintanilla, knowing our students background is key on determining what type of assessments they should be given. Dr. Brown noted to me in a post although regarding students where English is a second language “…it is sometimes difficult to decide if it is a real disability or if the language differences mimic a disability.”…

Through this process we focused on what we wanted to represent as a team working together in the best interest of our students. In the end we developed a vision that is now a foundation for our success, because everyone will benefit from our accomplishments. If we are able to effectively collaborate, which is important to our vision, then we will be able to create challenging lessons for our students and make certain that we are meeting the need of all students and inspiring them for future experiences. During the vision creating process, I also gained some perspective of things I need to develop for my future as a leader. Knowing that my personality is led by my feelings, there were moments when I did take things a little too personal.…
