As I was learning new information from WGSS 101, I was also reflecting my experience when I come across LGBTQ. I was thinking about over these years the way I acted unintentionally; but might offend people with other sexual orientation other than straight. I felt like a fool and an ignorant jerk. In my culture, people have less acceptance of LGBTQ. They were discriminated, oppressed, bullied… and I was one of the people who make fun of gay people. I am not homophobic; however, the norms in my culture taught me that gay people are not normal. Also, many transgender people in Asia, especially in Thailand are strippers or prostitutes. Therefore, I misunderstood that tranny are some sort of mental illness and for us to make fun of. Until I came across a Chinese book in a public library about transgender. The title of the book was She is My Brother. The book is dedicated to a beloved sister who was once a boy. It illustrates a tranny’s struggle through a family member. It gained my interest in learning more about LGBTQ, and I found that WGSS 101 will be the best way for me …show more content…
In many situations, the norm expected people to act a certain way. As if girls have to play with dolls and boys have to play trucks; no one ever told us it is necessary, however that is what society preferred. On the other hand, people with different faced a lot more challenges along the way. The LGBTQ panel was one material in class that affected me the most. When people share about their experiences and difficulties they faced for having other sexual orientation, they reminded me of my cousin. He was confused and when he told me about his possible sexual orientation, I regretted that I did not respond the right way. I might have hurt his feelings. However, if he comes to me again in the future, I will be the best listener for him and be supportive of his decision. After what I learned from this class, I believe I can be that person for

Starting off with the movie that we watched in class “Straight Laced” I thought that was a very interesting movie and something that gave me personally a lot of perspective and sort of opened my eyes a little bit. Because I am from a big city (washington Dc), I am used to being around people who are openly gay or openly transgender. But it really made me think about my high school. My high school was in the city and prided itself on diversity when in reality it was not that diverse. I think that my high school was similar to the movie.…

This right brought great relieved to the LGBT community because it meant less hate from the public because of personal decisions. In this film the LGBT community had close to zero privacy. Throughout the whole neighborhood they had a reputation of being transgender, which led to loss of jobs, and death threats. Things were so unsafe for many that they had to dress a certain way to be prepared for…

One of my roommates in college was gay. He confided in me about his sexual preference, knowing I’d respect his confidence. Back then, gay people were openly ridiculed and rejected and attacked. I wish I could say this was no longer true, but obviously I can’t. We’ve come a long way, but what happened in Orlando and the reaction to it provide harsh reminders of how people hate those who are different from them in some way.…

“Boys will be boys” my mom said nonchalantly as I told her what had occurred in my last class period of the day. It baffled me how a teenage boy being mocked for his sexuality could be so trivial in her eyes. I didn’t understand how the struggle for gay rights was any different from black rights or feminism. To me we were all united, brought together by our interminable fight for equality and acceptance. As an amiable and peaceful introvert I find it difficult to stand up for what I believe is right.…

    Argument Against Gay Love

Gay love has been an issue for the longest now and it’s beginning to get out of hand. But that’s not the only thing that’s getting out of hand, what also is getting out of hand is societies view on those who are transgender. Which brought to my attention that some people are so reluctant to change that they resort violence and brute force in order to shape things into their image whenever something that they say is wrong starts to occur. They are only interested and care about what they want to see is “right” day to day. The way we approach people who are gay or transgender is outright ridiculous and ignorant which can easily be added to the millions of other situations where ignorance has occurred in history.…

Many individuals have been both emotionally or physically harmed because they are not like everybody else. Judith Butler shares a story of a boy who walked and talked differently, and was often described as feminine. He committed suicide after hearing snide remarks and withstanding physical harm due to his “abnormal” actions. Females and males have conformed to act certain ways and wear certain things that exclusive to their sex and due to the discrimination they might face, individuals embody their own stereotypes. Individuals have to blend in with their environment to avoid being treated as an abnormality.…

The novel I decided to read and analyze was “Two Boys Kissing” by David Levithan. Throughout the novel Levithan describes the day to day lives of seven different teenage boys and the struggles they face because they identify as gay. I will be examining the concepts of constructing gender, being transgender, and the correlation of compulsory heterosexuality and discrimination against LGBT people. Gender is constructed at a very young age.…

Gender should not be a Big Issue in People 's Lives According to the "Dueling Dualism" written by Anne Fausto-Sterling, Maria Patino was a Spanish hurdler who had a special condition called "androgen insensitivity". She grew up as a woman but she was later labeled as a man by a scientific test and her life was totally changed due to this fact. (Fausto-Sterling 2013, 125-134) If I were Maria, I would definitely be shocked and surprised by this fact but I think it is a normal reaction.…

Although the topic of sexual orientation is complex that can be hard to understand, I think Kathleen, Sydney, and Yazmin all did a great job today. I like how they work as a team instead of working individually, and their way of facilitating class discussions created more social connections between peers and encouraged everyone to participate. Kathleen started the presentation by discussing the general terms and the consequences that related to the broad topic of sexual orientation. Then Yazmin focused on more theoretical perspectives to explain the difference between homosexuality and heterosexuality (e.g., kin selection hypothesis, balance selection hypothesis). Lastly, Sydney focused on psychoanalytic effects and used Freud’s bisexuality…

I was shocked that there are a group of people that are puzzled by discrimination. When they want to try some special styles of clothes, they cannot buy those clothes at the shopping mall; instead, they have to take advantage of LGTBQ Closet this event to try on these clothes. I believed everyone is the same; everyone has two eyes, one nose, two ears, and one month. We cannot have prejudice to someone else because of his or her sexual preference or his/her…

If we did not act our gender, we would be seen if we were misbehaving or were lesbians or gay. Many people cannot be themselves because society will judge them or can hurt them. Many times if people find out a person is homosexual, there can be a lot of consequences and people can get emotionally or physically hurt. Society judges homosexuals negatively because they are not following the gender norms or are behaving incorrectly. My family taught me that I had to act my gender or I would be seen as a lesbian.…
