Born on November 17, 1896 Lev Vygotsky was an early 20th century developmental psychologist who developed a sociocultural theory of child development known to be the Social Development theory. His theory was designed to account for the influence of culture on a child 's growth and development. Vygotsky was born into a family that was fond of both literature and art and he was raised in Gomel. After receiving his education at the University of Moscow, he went on to teach logic and psychology at a local college in Gomel. Serving as a teacher and researcher for approximately nine years, he became pioneering psychologist who made significant advancements in the field of child development. Vygotsky’s career focused on the subjects of educational psychology, child development, and developmental psychology.
Lev Vygotsky is credited for his contribution to human growth and development with the Social Development Theory. Vygotsky 's theoretical framework primary theme states that social interaction plays a fundamental role in the development of cognition. In 1978 Vygotsky stated: "Every function in the child 's cultural development appears twice: first, on the social level, and later, on the individual level; first, between people and then inside the child”. Included in his theoretical framework is the idea that the potential for cognitive development depends upon the "zone of proximal development" (ZPD).
