I want to first discuss Piaget 's stages of cognitive development. In Piaget 's theory, there are four stages of development; sensorimotor that spans from birth to 2 years of age, preoperational spanning from 2 to 7 years of age, concrete operations experienced from 7 to 12 years and formal operation 12 years and up. Piaget 's theories focus on the child and their outlooks on development, but discount the environmental influences that also affect development. Discounting parental and environmental roles causes me to question the validity of Piaget 's theory.
Unlike Piaget, Vygotsky took into consideration the interactions between a child and the people in that child 's life. Vygotsky looked at the influence an adult has on a younger child and established 3 levels of interactions that influence a developing child. The 3 levels are The Zone of Proximal Development, Scaffolding and Private speech. Preattachment birth to 6 weeks , Attachment in the making, 6 weeks to 8 months, Clear-cut Attachment 6 months to 2 years and Goal-corrected partnership. The first phase of attachment is where parents respond to queues offered by an infant. Such as an infant being hungry or ill. The attachment in the making phase is when infants signal that they recognize a caregiver. At this stage an infant is usually happy to see a familiar person and the child 's reaction helps solidify the bond between parent and child. Stage three of Clear-cut attachment is observed when an infant begins to move and consequently is able to seek out a person whom they are attached to in times of distress. Bowlby 's final stage of attachment is when the child begins to realize that the parents goals are different from their own and the relationship dynamic will start to
