In order to sufficiently define and explain how vulnerable populations are, in fact vulnerable, it is important to first define them. In accordance with this, it is crucial to address in what ways they are vulnerable. Specifically in disastrous circumstances communities need to know what population among them is vulnerable and how they can be appropriately supported.
Vulnerable Populations: A definition
In our modern society, it is easy to point out what populations might be vulnerable due to many different causes. We breed ideals that are so specific and high standard that is difficult for these to include most communities to obtain. Children – There are a number of daycare centers where numerous children spend their days. For example, the York Street Children’s Centre is in the heart of Sackville and could be an issue when disaster hits. It is crucial that they get to safety and with only a few caregivers at a time, it would be difficult to coordinate the large number of students that attend the daycare.
7. Single Parents – This group is tied to the previous group as they would have responsibility for, not only themselves, but also the children that are in their care. This would be difficult to do because they may not be able to provide adequate long term care after a disaster without the proper resources. Especially smaller infants who need attention most hours of the day. Not having a companion to help guide would be difficult.
8. Those Who Live In Vulnerable Infrastructure – Sackville has quite a few older buildings that may not be reliable if a disaster were to strike. Those living in these buildings would be at high risk, as they would need to leave the premises easily. Without knowing the problems associated with living in an older, less reliable building, they might not be prone to benefits that newer homes would have such as stable
