Tonya Powers an ICU nurse states “My responsibilities as an ICU nurse is to keep my patients alive or make sure that they comfortable if they are going to passway and keep them as comfortable as possible” (Powers 3). ICU nurses have many things that they do for their patients. ICU nurses must be prepared to assess patient 's condition and administer a treatment plan (How 3). Intensive care nurses have to be prepared for patients to go unresponsive so, they can immediately start CPR (Lutas 3). They have to administer treatments, medications, wound care and many different forms of intervention (RN 6). They not only have to administer things they must also keep track of more than one patient’s medical information, including vital signs, drug side effects, deterioration and progress (RN 4). They also have to perform medical histories, physical exams, signs and symptoms evaluation, and diagnostic tests (RN 3). Establishing and reviewing effective treatment plans, interpreting patient information, operating medical equipment, and making critical decisions on necessary actions (RN 8). Working with different patients, from pediatric ones to geriatric ones, observing their behavior (diet, exercise and hygiene) and keeping clear records of all the different patients taken care of in a day of work (RN 2). Nursing in general require a GPA range of 2.0 to 3.25 (RN 39). They need 3 years of science, specifically chemistry and biology (RN 38). All nursing programs require all students to take courses in anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, psychology and nutrition and the social behavioral sciences (How 3). They also are required to have 4 years of english (RN 39). They are also required to take three years of math education (RN 40). ICU nurses should complete a diploma or an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program in nursing (How 3). Any nurse must also pass a National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (How 12). After taking these courses the ICU nurse must train in their specialized clinical field . They will need to learn to perform CPR, take blood pressure,monitor heart rate, and run advanced life support equipment and other technological monitoring devices (How 3). They must be able to communicate with other critical care medical professionals as a team (How 3). They will learn to keep patients who can not breath on a ventilator and keep them sedated (Lutas 3). They will also learn to give the right amount of vitamin to a patient through the veins (Lutas 2).
