They say that everyone has a talent, and this principle holds especially true to authors. Some are able to precisely write about the world before them, while others flawlessly create their own world, while very few can combine the two. C.S. Lewis is the third kind of author, as shown in his impeccable novel, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. In this work of art, Lewis writes the story of three English children going from living boring lives in our world to leading adventurous and exciting ones in the fantastical world of Narnia, and returning happier and all together better than when they left. Through the pen of the author, we as readers are able to experience their excellent adventure as well. One of the novel’s greatest aptitudes is in Lewis’s ability to create vibrant and engaging characters. His creations are all unique, and precisely developed in order to propel the plot forward and their personalities, be they serious or silly, make the book far more interesting and simply a joy to read. While occurring continuously, the best example of a symbol is Eustace. At one point in the story, his greed and corruption leads to him taking a quick rest in a dead dragon’s cave, a place filled with gold and treasures of all kinds. However, he undergoes a transformation while he sleeps into an entirely different creature, making him on the outside what he is on the inside: a dragon. This transformation is the beginning of a new Eustace, both figuratively and literally, since he changes considerably for the better afterward. One could also argue that this is not only a powerful symbol of change, but also one of Christian baptism and rebirth.
