Public education within itself is a hot topic for most states now a days. According to Parents for Public Schools, “school choice” is the tagline of this year’s legislative session, with the number one topic being charter schools and passing a charter school bill. There are mixed opinions around the state on school choice and charter schools. Educational choice is not a new issue that many are faced with. School choice initiatives are based on the premise that allowing parents to choose what schools their children attend is not only the fair thing to do, but also an important strategy for improving public education. Instead of a one-size-fits-all mode, choice programs offer parents various alternatives from which to pick the educational settings they believe will work best for their children states the text. (Brimley, p. 245) Being the district’s parental involvement specialist, parents always want to be offered a choice when their child’s educational future is at stake. To drive my point home, according to the text in the 2010 Phi Delta Kappan/Gallup Poll, parents were asked if more school choice was a factor in “keeping public schools moving on the right track.” Thirty-eight percent indicated that it was very important, and 40 percent responded that it was somewhat important. Some pros for private school include having an environment that allow students to experience a lot with course offerings. A con for private schools deal with transportation. Most students that attend private schools have cars or reliable transportation making situation inconvenient for some with due to the lack of bus transportation for kids.
