After watching Selma, and witnessing the struggles endured in pursuit of civil rights in America; I think it is extremely important to vote as an American citizen. After seeing what Oprah Winfrey's character had to go through to get approved to vote was very mind opening. Constantly having to come back knowing more and more information that over half of the average American today does not know is absurd. Also witnessing the way African Americans were treated during peaceful protest shows the importance of voting as well, not just because of what they had to go through for everyone regardless of race and gender to vote but to be sure that times never reverse to the way that they once were. The weakness of our voting System I have never convinced of the saying, “every vote counts,” when our founding fathers created this democracy they were distrustful of the masses. They designed the system to make sure citizens never had too much power, because if they did they would make mistakes. They set up the Electoral College so “wrong” votes could be corrected. Therefore, I believe that voting is not an effective form of political participation, because the voting system is flawed. I believe each vote doesn’t count as much as it should because of the Electoral College.…
