Voting Age To 16 Essay

Decent Essays
I believe that the current voting age should be maintained at 18 instead of 16. i believe that even if they were to change the legal voting age to 16 that many young people would still not vote. i also think that they should keep the voting age at 18 because 16 year olds are not ready for the responsability of voting, and many of them still most likely dont understand how serious voting actually is. I dont think they should change the voting age to 16 from 18 because i don't think many young people would vote. In 2012 only 38% of voters were between the ages of 18 and 24,also in 2012 they said 62% of younger voters were not actually interested in voting. Personally I am 24 years old and have never had a interest in voting before this past year. Many of the people I have spoken to in my age group have never voted or have a interest in voting ethier. I believe that if they change the rule to 16 the percent of younger people voting would still stay very low because they cant force people to vote in America and most younger people just aren't interested in politics yet. Just because they changed the the age to 16 doesnt mean that the percent of younger people voting would increase. Another reason i believe that the voting age should stay at age …show more content…
I believe the 16 year olds in America just arent ready to vote and also because i dont think they will have much interest in voting if the statistics of voters between 18 and 24 is so low already I don't see it increasing just cuz they lower the age to 16. Maybe someday we will be ready to change the voting age to 16 but before then I think we need to get younger people interested in politics and interested in voting that way if they do lower the age at least they know that the 16 year olds know about voting and actually care about it that way we can see the number of younger people voting

Americans should not be required to vote. Once an action becomes required by the law, it becomes a chore. Document B shows the difference in rates of adults who are above 30 and under who vote. Ages 18 to 29 are at a little above 50%, while the rest start at 60% and go up. It is evident that younger Americans are not as interested or devoted to our elections.…

Voting is one of the first rights we look forward to do when we turn eighteen years old. Votings is a huge part of running a successful democratic government. There are currently 5 amendments that deal with voting rights in our country. The first voting amendment was in 1886 and that was the 15th amendment. The current legal drinking age restriction is 18. This was set in 1970s because during the Vietnam War, they believed that if a person could be conscripted to fight and die for their country, they should also have the right to drink alcohol. (Good and bad). I strongly believe that the current legal drinking age should not be 18. I believe it should be raised to the age of 20.…

    Essay On Voting Age

According to an article on The Cincinnati Enquirer, studies have shown that voting is a habit to begin early. It was found that if people don’t start out as voters when they are young, they are less likely to ever vote. One of these studies included a Yale University study in which it was discovered that students shown how to operate a voting machine were more than twice as likely to vote as students who weren’t shown. Lowering the voting age would both increase voter turnout and further educate citizens about the voting process, in turn causing them to vote more responsibly than some young adults today. It is for these reasons that I strongly believe that the voting age in the United States should be lowered to sixteen years of age.…

First of all, the outrageous criteria to be eligible to vote here in the United States is undoubtedly preposterous. To vote, you first have to be 18 years or older ("What Are the Requirements to Be Eligible to Vote in Federal Elections?"). While this may seem justified, many people eager to vote are being withheld from doing so because of this age requirement. Voting shouldn’t be off limits to someone because of their age! Instead, the age requirement should be lowered significantly in order to allow more freedom for a surplus of citizens.…

Should 16 and 17-year-olds be allowed to vote? In the article, “Takoma Park 16-year-old savors his history-making moment at the polls” by Annys Shin, stated that about 350 students ages 16 and 17 would be allowed to vote granted to them by Takoma City Council. Which means that the Montgomery community is the first to lower the voting age from 18 to 16. I believe lowering the voting age from 18 to 16 is not the best idea in the world.…

This is a good point but overall we should not be forcing the uneducated to vote. The frontal lobe of the brain is responsible for judgment and decision-making and does not fully develop until the age of twenty-one, so it would be more logical to change the voting limit to twenty-one. It would also make sense to have people pass a basic constitution test before voting. This will sort out the wise from the unwise because only the people who truly care to do research will put the time and effort into voting. This will keep the uneducated from voting, while still giving everyone the opportunity to…

There have been highs and lows in the amount of voter participation. At an all time high in 1960 at 63.8% of people voting, and at an all time low in 1924 at 48.9%, and around 55% of eligible voters voted this year. Most young people don’t vote on elections, simply because it doesn’t interest them enough to put forth the effort to vote. You see more a turnout on the opposite end of the spectrum. More elderly people vote because the the current policies…

Yes, l agree that lowering the voting age is a good ideal because all sorts of dire predictions will be made when the voting age is lowered to 18. Although arguments against lowering the voting age to 16 sound silly today. Some of the reason why lowering the voting age are as follows. One of the problem facing America is aging voting population. This is because the elderly vote at a higher rate than other groups, so their influence will be further magnified so we need a balance.…

    The Voting Age

Looking for a glimmer of light in the darkness, I found a clue aligned with my own heart. The statement, "One real problem facing America is the aging voting population," "(Keep the Voting Age at 18)," is the piece of evidence in the battle, rewarded with my own agreement. Listing the pro's and con's, leads to and overwhelming number of facts assisting in my evaluation; the victor, "Keep the Voting Age at 18". I find, after reviewing the percentage of people voting, inserted in both articles, an alarming neglect of society. Alas, is there any merit to people who do not take a patriotic stance during our electorial process?…

When one is voting, they are trusted to make a mature decision. Eighteen is mature enough to decide who should run the country, but not mature enough to buy and consume alcohol legally. One is trusted to vote, but one is not trusted to have a drink. Chris Busby once stated in his monthly magazine, “If 18-year-olds are considered mature enough to fight in wars, they’re mature enough to drink in bars. To this I would add that if 18-year-olds can vote for the politicians who start wars, they’re old enough to choose the wrong brand of beer, too.”…
