Vonnegut Use Of Satire In Cat's Cradle

In all pieces of literature there is something to be understood, whether it be the exact words written on the page or a hidden meaning behind the words. In the novel Cat’s Cradle the author Kurt Vonnegut uses satire as constructive criticism for society. If the reader is not looking for this satire they might miss the satire completely and need to seek outside sources beyond the novel itself to understand Vonnegut’s humor. In order to interrupt Vonnegut’s novel the reader must connect broad topics such as religion and government to the novel’s version; Lionel Johnson and “Papa” Monzano. An example of Satire that Vonnegut uses that is difficult to understand or glean from the novel is the humor between science and religion.

Vonnegut’s fictional religion Bokonism is an honest religion, “Nothing in this book is true. Live by the forma that makes you brave and kind and healthy and happy”(Vonnegut 6) Although Bokonism, which represents religion, is made up of lies the religion is able to give hope and reason to humanity; whereas, according to Vonnegut, science, without some form of religion, destroys humanities hope for a greater purpose. Vonnegut uses ice-nine and Bokonism to show how societies morals are twisted; that society, against lies, prefers religion to science, the preferred truth. Vonnegut, through this novel shows that society prefers lies because religion makes a society feel as though it can be useful, and thus continue to exist.
To prove his point even further Vonnegut creates a type of parallel scenario for his readers to show how religion is a lie and science is truthful. Vonnegut has the “world” end by ice-nine or science, rather than by religion or a greater power from beyond. The irony of the “end” to Vonnegut’s novel is that most religions teach its followers that the world will not end by a scientific discovery or catastrophic natural occurring event, but by an otherworldly power. Which if the reader knows to look for this; they would be able to see Vonnegut’s criticism on

Throughout history, man has shown a great tendency to gravitate towards decisions that end in destruction, especially if the destruction will not directly affect himself. Occurences such as war declarations do not necessarily have to be decided on by the masses, but only a single man’s will. By that man’s will, millions of innocent lives can be lost, his own usually not included. Kurt Vonnegut is a fantastic author that uses satire in order to draw attention and ridicule the flaws of mankind, most of which end in destruction and chaos of some sort. In two of his novels, Cat’s Cradle and Slaughterhouse-Five, damage and destruction of millions is determined by what can potentially be a single man’s decision.…

Vonnegut’s fusion of historical fiction and science fiction in Slaughterhouse Five (Vonnegut, 1969), allows for an exploration of the aftermath of the war on both individuals who fought in it, and society post-war, which he does more specifically through the character of the protagonist, Billy Pilgrim, and his invention of Tralfamadore. Noted by Kevin Brown, Vonnegut wanted to “remind the reader of the anomic alienation that existed in the society that came after that war” (Brown, 2011), which he does so eloquently through the element of science fiction within the novel. Despite the fusion of the two genres disrupting the chronology of the novel, we can explore how this seems to be relevant and contributes to the novel in a unique way that…

He begins mentioning the little flaws in the system. Vonnegut explains how humans no longer have the ability to express themselves, to have thoughts and greatest of all - to feel. This then creates an empty and defeated mood because they can not change anything about the situation. Alone, these two elements already mock the idea of equality, thus developing the theme that true equality doesn’t do any good, but rather ruins lives by robbing them of their…

His tone throughout the story is sarcastic and sardonic and he also displays a dry witty sense of humor he adopts the same tone throughout the story even though he is talking about a dangerous and worrying situation. Marvin points out that “mixing brutal realism with science fiction, Slaughterhouse Five challenges readers to make sense of a world gone mad” (113). The use of science fiction presents real events in a new way, one that can reveal more truths than a historical account could. Students can benefit from this by seeing how different genres can be used to portray the same ideas, and how some genres are more effective than others for conveying certain messages. Slaughterhouse Five is similar to Picasso’s Guernica in that it uses surrealism and fiction to portray the harsh reality of war (McNelly). Vonnegut’s use of science fiction can be compared to the works of Picasso and other abstract artists to show the connections and similarities between literature and art.…

“So it goes.” These three words convey the fatalistic mindset of Kurt Vonnegut through the voice of Billy Pilgrim, the protagonist of Vonnegut’s novel, Slaughterhouse Five. Throughout the novel, Billy Pilgrim suffers flashbacks of the horrors of war, specifically those associated with the bombing of Dresden. By narrating the novel through the voice of Billy, Vonnegut conveys his belief that war is absurd, exemplified by the causes and effects of the firebombing of Dresden.…

By examining all aspects of war, Vonnegut approaches the cruelty of war from a variety of different perspectives in order to craft one, unified thesis about the meaning of war. Kurt Vonnegut proposes that wars are anything but wonderful by using dark humor and comedic techniques to distance the reader from tragedy in the plot in order to broaden the perspective on war as a whole.…

Postmodernism arose in the mid to late 20th century and was a movement that mainly impacted the arts such as music, architecture and literature. Postmodernism arose hugely due to the events in America at the time and the failures of Modernism. Because of this, many postmodernists have a very skeptical look into elements of their society. To properly analyze Vonnegut’s unique writing style and literary choices, one must first take a look some of the basic elements of a postmodern novel of which Vonnegut’s style for this book is based on. The postmodern style can be very different from author to author, thus making it very hard to categorize all American postmodern literature into one specific style.…
