In the novel “Tangerine,” by Edward Bloor, Erik’s choices and the consequences of those choices affected the main character, Paul. Erik is Paul's older brother, who made many significant choices throughout the novel. Some of the choices Erik made was, he hit Tino in the face, told Arthur to hit Luis, and when they were younger Erik held Paul's arms back while letting his friend Victor spray white paint into Paul's eyes. The first choice Erik made was, he hit Tino in the face. On page 205, it says, “Immediately faster than I thought he could, faster than Tino thought he could, Erik lashed out, smashing the back of his hand across Tino's face, smashing him so hard that Tino spun halfway around in the air and landed on the grass.”…

Even though the phrase “point of view” is just three measly words, it is one of the most important choices an author needs to make while deciding how they are going to write their story. Will they write in first person and use “I”, and “we”, or write in 3rd person and address people by their names or use pronouns like “he” or “they”? Although many people decide to write in third person point of view, both the stories The Georges and the Jewels by Jane Smiley, and Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse by Anna Sewell develop their characters through first person point of view. The Georges and the Jewels is a story in perspective of a little girl named Abby, who has had both the good and the bad with horses. She has been thrown off of her…

Summarize: The author, Sarah Dover, urges the point that all prisoners deserve basic human rights. The idea is achieved through the use of Hamilton jail as an example. Dover claims that these prisoners’ voices are being silenced by the prison guards “are not working”. She claims that people that are treated the worst are the ones that have not yet been proven guilty. It is quite obvious that she is in favor of basic rights for prisoners.…

“Mnulloloved good frond homy buronor…” That’s what I made out from the first line of the letter Sebastian Brandt wrote to Henry Hovener describing life in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1622. The writer’s main point was that living in a colony in the New World was very difficult and that the colonists needed more supplies, such as beds, linen, sheets, and shoes. His letter seems to be trustworthy, since it took much difficulty to survive in America at the time and the settlers needed more supplies. The intended audience is clearly Henry Hovener, since the letter was written for him.…

The concepts of genre, audience, and rhetorical situation are alike in their significance to the process of writing. They can be distinguished not only by their definitive meanings, but by a series of questions considered in the early stages of writing; what do I want to say, how do I want to say it, and who do I want to say it to? To these questions there are no clear-cut answers, empowering the writer to explore a variety of topics. It is important to understand that genre, audience, and rhetorical situation are not considered in a sequential order, nor are they exclusive to planning. In fact, the development of new ideas can occur in any stage of writing.…

According to Stalla Corcos, the goal of the Alliance Israelie Universelle is “enlightenment,” i.e., to bring people together to form “one society and for one purpose in pursuing the general good.” (459) While one may argue that Corcos’ letter is a strategic fund-application proposal that cannot be taken literally, the same goal is repeated in another letter addressed to the teachers, this time with more details: “The alliance is less concerned with producing half-learned men than in forming good and tolerant men who feel an attachment to their duties as citizens and as Jews, who are dedicated to the public good and to their brothers.” (463) Considering Habermas’ ideal of a late 18th to early 19th century public sphere, which has been so far…

In Letters to a Young Poet “Letter One” by Ranier Maria Rilke, a young poet sends his poetry to the published author in hopes to receive constructive criticism about his work. The young poet, who was directed to Rilke by the author’s former colleague, wrote an unseen letter asking for advice about his work. Rilke, who stated that he was not accustomed to criticize other works, provides an effective instructive response using specific command words to promote confidence in the young poet. At first glance of the letter, the reader can see that Rilke had spent a few days pondering over his reply: “Your letter arrived just a few days ago” (p 5). This explains how careful Rilke wanted to be when he responded to the young poet.…

Minerva Mirabal is not only described as intelligent, family oriented, a leader, and headstrong in what she believes in but as well an idealist, which is clearly exemplified through the works of Julia Alvarez’s In the Time of the Butterflies. This is first evident when Minerva says, “‘I asked the talking board what I would be when I grew up, and it said a lawyer’... For years Minerva has been agitating to go to law school… ‘It’s about time we women had a voice in running our country’” (Alvarez 10).…
