Have you ever heard of a tap tap? Three summers ago, I discovered a tap tap not just a nickname for banging a pencil on a deck, but a kind of taxi in Haiti. They are called tap taps because the passengers will signal the driver to stop or go by simply tapping on the back of the truck. I learned this fact on a mission trip to Haiti three summers ago. The trip was a very eye opening experience where I learned that I have many things to be thankful for.…

Being a member of the Appalachia Volunteers of Boston College has been one of my most defining experiences in the past 2 and a half years. The Appalachia Volunteers Program is a yearlong program than includes weekly Sunday night meetings based on the program’s mission “to love, learn, and serve” and culminates in a weeklong service trips to the Appalachian region and beyond. Through both the meetings and my experiences on these service trips I have gained new perspectives and learned more about myself than I had ever thought possible and I will be forever grateful for that. Love is all around. The Appalachia Volunteers Program introduced me to the concept of agape, and showed me this unconditional, selfless love first hand.…

I am interested in the NSLI-Y program because It would be amazing opportunity to learn a new language and culture, and help with a career later in life. I am open to trying and learning new things as well as meeting new people if I am selected. I would also be able to share my experience with others after I return home. Living outside the United States is good because it helps people understand other cultures. We learned about ethnocentrism in social studies and I think things would change for the better if people were exposed to different places and ideas.…

Creating a way in which everyone volunteers within the U.S. is a wonderful way to make sure everyone and everything (i.e. animals, the planet) are taken care of. With excuses coming from everywhere it would be slightly hard to get the system going, but it would easily help our planet as a whole. There are ways to allow all individuals to do something they are interested in and once the system truly gets going it will show that mandating volunteer work is a considerable, yet important step to take. Like every idea out there, there are some drawbacks of making people volunteer.…

For 10 years I was unable to travel outside the United Staes. However, the opportunity to travel with other DACA (Deferral Action for Childhood Arrival) students to Mexico City was open to me, during this one week out I was allowed to join the Mexican government conferences on how to help youth. This educational experience led me to realize that there are many individuals that are interested in traveling and learning other cultures, the links that are formed when one travels with other are completely different than those we form with only a few hours of interactions.…

The temporary volunteers stay for a couple of months up to a year which leads the younger people in the country getting really attached to the volunteers. Also, it could end up hurting them when the volunteers leave and never come back, and this could occur many times if a child gets attached to more than one volunteer. We all know that the volunteers mean well but they do not know the repercussions that they could have on the young ones. The text that I had the chance to read “Voluntourism Gone Wrong: The ugly side of voluntourism” reported that volunteers create false role models for the children that they will never achieve. Briefly, the volunteers could mean well but could end up with consequences that they were not aware…

In addition to employment programs engaging the homeless, tourism-related companies can play a role in working with the homeless. In several cities around the world, pro-poor tourism has become a widespread trend. It has been argued that forms of pro-poor tourism, like slum tourism, can help alleviate poverty; however, successful pro-poor tourism requires extensive planning, “stimulating local involvement, partnerships and procurement” (Harrison, 2008, p. 854). A trend in this type of tourism involves homeless people giving tours of the impoverished sections of cities. One example is in Barcelona, Spain: ‘Hidden City Tours’ offer tourists an alternative view of the city led by a homeless guide (Arias, 2014).…
