The summer after the ninth grade I decided to volunteer at my church's summer camp. It was my first time volunteering as an animator, camp counselor, and I was very nervous. The camp had a certain schedule like a school. First we would start off with breakfast. Next would be house time which was a time where the kids would get together by age and they would play games and learn chants. After that was all camp, which is where all the kids would mix together and play a game. Then we had activity sessions. Finally the kids would all get together to say a prayer, and then we would go to lunch. But where I had trouble was activity sessions. I was in the arts and crafts room, and the girl in charge of that activity was the total opposite of me. Her …show more content…
She refused to let anyone use the supplies in the arts and crafts room, unless they got permission from her first. If she was out one day and the arts and crafts room was a mess we would spend the beginning of the camp cleaning it up. I felt like I was the camper instead of the animator. Maybe it was the things she experienced at the camp or other camps and programs but I could not relate to her. I found it so hard to work with her. Every time I would try to help out I would somehow not do it right or I did it the opposite way of how she wanted it. And that’s how it was most days during activity sessions. I didn’t like the way she ran things and I didn’t like her. She was straight forward with the animators, kind of mean, and sort of a neat freak. I didn’t know what experiences she had gone through, but I knew I didn’t like her. But as the days passed, it got easier and easier to understand her. I soon got promoted to co-head of the arts and crafts room. And as soon as that happened, I began to see why she was so straightforward with all of the animators, and I began to understand that she wasn’t being mean to the

Firstly, for youngsters experiencing childhood in an organized, halfway house sort setting, it is absolutely critical that kids have the capacity to build up a steady, long haul connection to their parental figures. Permitting troops of voyagers to come in and embrace, play and giggle with the children at regular intervals has unequivocally the inverse impact. Pretty much as it was helpful for you as a kid to grow long haul, stable bonds with the general population who nurtured you, so it is essential for those youngsters. To participate in halfway house volunteering is to partake in a cycle of making and forsaking connections that helps no one candidly with the exception of…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

Collaboration has played a major role both personally and for my community. My first experience with collaborations is when I joined a FIRST robotics team. As you can imagine, I had to work with teammates of every kind in order to produce a final product. However, the more I became involved with the team, the more I started working with people outside the team. For example, the team and I started several new fund raisers that helped promote community collaboration.…

When I got asked to help volunteer at my church’s children worship I thought I would only watch and help a little, but I was wrong. The chidren were very curious about God and how to be a good Christian. On my first day volunteering I got to lead the first grade class and would have to teach a lesson about temptations and how to withstand from bad temptations. After teaching, ages from four to seven came together singing about God’s word then a story was told about how to overcome everyday sinful temptations and the children were so intrigued and fascinated with the story that once it was over they asked questions and a young girl, Lily asked me a question. Lily asked me about ways I defy bad temptations and what I did to be a follower of…

The next time I attended a camp at CRG it was just me and my two other siblings. My parents and Anthony were left at home. This time, when I stepped onto the campsite, there was no snow and it was warm enough to wear shorts and a t-shirt, but I was nervous to be attending Sibling Camp for the very first time. Without Holland, who was also attending the camp, it would have taken longer to break away from my shyness. She had already known most of the kids our age…

During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center. The neighborhood around the food pantry seemed very run down and poor. Shortly after arriving there, we were directed to the room where all the food was stored after it had been donated, waiting to be sorted.…
