Volunteering Personal Statement

Decent Essays
Through lifeguarding, volunteering at Senior Citizen events in the summer, volunteering at the local children's hospital, tutoring fellow students in my school, moving furniture, handling customers food orders and working with my fellow peers in organizing fundraising events to benefit the community, I feel I have grasped what it means to make an influence on somebody else through my actions upon them. Through my many contributions to my community, I have discovered what I want to spend the rest of my life doing and feel that the world needs more love and care towards others. The volunteerism and experiences I have participated in have allowed me to see the many battles and struggles that those around me go through and I want to be the one

As a volunteer I hope to develop skills that will help me become more well rounded, skills such as being humble, charitable, generous, involved, and selfness. In my community we have a lake, where students can volunteer on a monthly basis. I started volunteering at the lake when I was in sixth grade and continue to do so up until this day. I also enjoy volunteering to help the refugees who attend my church. My task is to help them learn how to use computers and write resumes in order to get jobs, but rather than doing it for the ‘recognition’ I use my free time to better the lives of others and that is enough of a reason for me to do it again and…

I can now be an advocate for volunteering and making a difference in the community, because I have done so, not because it is good to tell students in the classroom that volunteering is right. It can lead to discussions in the classroom about what sort of things can be done to help the community, and then can branch off into at home, in school, in the county, the state, the country, the world. I will also be able to link subjects together easier because of this. Community is a social studies topic, but all the other subjects were included into this activity making it very interdisciplinary. I do have a strong belief in helping the community in a positive way, and so I want to pass that on, in every student that I have, that they should make a difference where they live, or the people that is around them, because the reward for it is the feeling of accomplishment, helpfulness, and making…

Describe your commitment to your community through service-oriented activities such as volunteer work, civic and other group activities. My feelings about serving the community can be expressed by this quote from Mother Teresa, “At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothe me. I was homeless and you took me in.”…

“If you want to be happy for an hour, play a video games, if you want to be happy for a day, go to an amusement park, but if you want be happy forever, help others” I stared at that sign in my seventh grade social studies teacher’s class. Now in eighth grade, I smiled, as I proceeded to continue helping my teacher put up kids’ map of the world. Picking up the next map and carefully examining each of the continents I thought, “This is what I love. I do think I will be happy forever helping others who need my help as a volunteer”. That's when I truly understood my love for volunteering and making others smile.…
