Volunteering Personal Statement

Raised in a Buddhist household, my parents have instilled in me the core value of putting the concerns of others before mine. With this, I have felt that it has always been my responsibility to take care of others. Through primary school and middle school, I quickly took the role of being an outlet for my friends, classmates, and teachers whenever they needed help or someone to talk to; listening to their problems, staying after school to help my teachers for any minor help that they needed in the classrooms, and having an overall open mind to any situation. My passion to help others continued on to high school, where I was introduced to volunteering opportunities in my neighboring communities. My first experience in helping the greater community

As a volunteer I hope to develop skills that will help me become more well rounded, skills such as being humble, charitable, generous, involved, and selfness. In my community we have a lake, where students can volunteer on a monthly basis. I started volunteering at the lake when I was in sixth grade and continue to do so up until this day. I also enjoy volunteering to help the refugees who attend my church. My task is to help them learn how to use computers and write resumes in order to get jobs, but rather than doing it for the ‘recognition’ I use my free time to better the lives of others and that is enough of a reason for me to do it again and…

Become like an explorer, cutting a path through the jungle for the rest of his group to follow. Though, it’s mostly about mapping out where you need to go to “win” as a team; becoming dynamic and inspiring. I want to bring compelling visions to the group and help motivate and inspire them to help deliver that vision.…

Shadowing a physician provided me with direct exposure to medicine, allowing me to engage with patients and interact with physicians. I obtained insight from physicians about their experiences and specialties. I also had the opportunity to listen to patients’ stories and concerns. I learned that medicine is not merely about applying medical knowledge to treat others, but also about the quality of interaction that physicians forge with their patients. Furthermore, this experience helped me explore the daily lives of physicians and the challenges they face.…

I show leadership, service, or scholarship character every day at school and home with all my sisters. But there are many events, where I show service more. For example, I help Ms. Soto with the PTA meetings that the school has, I also take care of her son Aaron whenever she has an important meeting to attend. I'm willing to give up my personal time to take care of Aaron because I feel like if I see anyone needing to help I should to help them in any way I can. It's something inside of me that wakes up and tells me " go help ", " they need your help, go to see what you can do."…

Rooted in a solid Catholic family, they have modeled just how important dependability and self-control is in relation to leadership, but also in one's Faith life. I believe that to be a Christian, one must be ready to make commitments and stay true to them. However, just as St. Francis of Assisi said, "Preach the Gospel at all times. If necessary use words," one must be apprehensive in their attitude towards their peers. Last summer, I had the privilege to work as a Catholic summer camp counselor.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…

“When are you ever going to behave like a proper woman!” my mother shouted, as I walked through the door, dressed in a mini skirt and two hours later than my curfew. I rolled my eyes as a sixteen-year-old girl, whose only care at that moment is to get away from seemingly controlling parents. My father stood nearby, containing the anger he felt towards my attitude. This was a typical situation in my home growing up as a teenage girl in Canada.…

The Concepts of Morals When’s the last time you helped a complete stranger and expected nothing in return? I try to do a good deed every day, and sometimes I completely forget. However, on those days I do help someone else, I always get a good feeling deep inside in which I’m instantly reminded of my grandparents who taught me a lot about morals, my parents who always see the good in people and my family and friends who are there for me no matter what. One of my deepest core beliefs would be to have personal morals. People these days don’t seem to have the same morals that our grandparents had when they were our age.…
