When I started volunteering at the Senior Center I was not aware of everything the Senior Center offered. I was also not aware of the many people elders that needed to see and have communication with people. Volunteering at the Senior Center allowed me to talk to the elders that attended the Senior Center. Whenever I got a chance I would sit down and listen to what some of the amazing elders in our community had to say. The impact that being a volunteer at the senior center had on others was to begin with that the cook had a lot more breaks than he would have if I had not been volunteering.…

As a Diversity Scholar I currently volunteer 10- 12 hours a year for the Department of Community Engagement and Multicultural center on campus. Yet, due to my demanding work schedule I am unable to participate in many other community service projects. However, if selected for the Shawn Carter foundation scholarship I plan to meet the 25hr/ of community service requirement by joining the Diversity Outreach Team, Volunteering at the Campus food pantry, and Participating in Alternative Spring break. I had high expectations for myself in volunteering at so many places but when the time came, I wasn't able to because there was either a conflict with the schedule, location or transportation. If only there would have been more people volunteering, then so much more people could have been helped. And if more people can be help, then the suffering on earth can be ease. An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
