Volunteering In The Science Field

Working at the science department at Eastern Florida was unlike any other experience I ever had. Traditionally, I had done mediocre office work for my previous volunteer positions. But I had never been inclined to volunteer in a science field before and I would had never looked that way as I want to major in communications. I had come across this volunteering position when my old professor at the time asked me if I had wanted to consider volunteering at the science lab for part of my service-learning as a part of his class. In a conscious great effort to get on my professors' good side, I decided to volunteer at the science department. I will be the first to admit, volunteering there was slow at first but gradually with time, I got a chance …show more content…
Volunteering at the science department was so much different than anything I had ever done before and in some aspects it felt freeing. It got me to step out of my comfort zone and learn these different experiments and chemicals some of which are deadly but nevertheless more thrilling. It awarded me the opportunity to see what working in the science field is all about and it showed me whether I wanted to do that field overall which I do not. One thing that I was surprised at is how close-knit everyone at that department is. From my supervisor to the lab assistants that work in the department, everyone there treats each other like a second-family. They look out for each other, some hangout after work together. I had continued to volunteer here until March 10th, 2016 which was the day I completed all of my hour requirements for Citizen Scholar and the necessary hours needed for my community involvement course. I was commended for my professionalism and work ethic while volunteering and to this day, I continued to volunteer their when I have the

Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

It is such an empowering feeling knowing even though my part was little it was still apart of a big plan. It is also so rewarding when seeing how truly grateful the organization is for each and every volunteer. The best benefit to me is meeting all of the extraordinary men and women who have been affected by breast cancer. Thousands of people die each year from this disease and being able to help make a difference for finding the cure is one of the best feelings. Their stories are of course heartbreaking but also admirable because they don’t give up.…

It is a great pleasure to recommend Rachel Sitasz for admission to the Edward Hospital Student Volunteer Program. She is one of the most empathetic, kind, and exceptional humans I have encountered in my 14 years of teaching. I teach Rachel in my 8th grade advanced ELA class. Her academics, character, innate curiosity, intrinsic motivation, ethical standards, and unwavering desire to give back, have put Rachel in a class of her own. In fact, for the first time in over 25+ years, the eighth-grade team created a brand new end-of-the-year award for our graduation awards assembly.…

Up until high school, I have never experienced science as I did in a high school environment, specifically in DRS, where I fell in love with chemistry in 10th grade. It was so interesting to look at the different ways our environment, even ourselves, at a cellular level interact with one another. This love for the science influenced me to take upon myself the challenge of AP Chemistry. So far I have further developed and honed my skills. I have further ingrained in myself the idea to question everything.…
