The main concept of volunteer work is that one should do the work because they choose to better their community. Requiring volunteerism in schools around the country can be considered to be contradictory in its purpose, simply because the definition of volunteer is to freely offer to do something. A student who volunteers will appear as a well-rounded student to colleges; these students have taken steps to engage in their community and go above and beyond which is appealing to colleges.
Students will gain confidence and a sense of pride from helping those in need. The pride and confidence gained from volunteering can boost moods in the students and create hard workers. The positive experiences enjoyed while volunteering creates a special individual who will be confident and connected to their community. While the student does not evolve alone when it comes to volunteering; the community strengthens, becomes unified and evolves as a whole.
Required volunteerism is not a negative model, as it can force students to step out of their comfort zones, interact with people in their community they otherwise would not, learn new skills and it will create a strong and diverse individual. The community will benefit immensely as well from the increase in people giving back due required volunteerism at the junior high and high school
