Volunteering In High School

Improved Essays
One of the thoughts that have plagued my mind throughout high school is how was I going to be able to pay for college. I come from a family of two middle-class parents. For the most part, they are able to pay the bills and provide the basis for our family. However, they certainly do not make enough to pay for much of my college costs. Throughout my life, there have also been a number of times where it has been difficult for my parents to pay bills. For example, it is often difficult for my parents to come up with even $50 extra a month for things like groceries, the internet bill, or unexpected costs; this means that they often have to wait until their next paycheck to pay for these things. So, it is not difficult to see why I need scholarships to help pay for at least part of tuition, books, and other supplies I will need during college.

As an active member of NHS and the secretary of Shepherd’s Interact Club, I have had many opportunities to volunteer. A few events that I have been a part of include blood drives at Shepherd High School, Applefest at Papa's Pumpkin Patch, the art mural in downtown Shepherd, the elementary school carnival, and many other events. As secretary of Interact Club, I have been expected to help recruit people to go on volunteer outings such as delivering cookies to the elderly in nursing homes. I have also been expected to help plan fundraising events for the club and recruiting people to help work these events.
Overall, I have worked diligently throughout high school to be an active part of my school, and community. I have strived to seek leadership positions in my school, and achieved them as a class treasurer, student council representative, and Interact Club Secretary. Due to my volunteer experience, and continued dedication to both my school and community I hope you will give me for the honor of being awarded this

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…
