Volunteering In High School

Society cares too much about what we do, and not enough about why we do it. Volunteering is a requirement the majority of students in high school must fulfill to graduate. However, there ought to be a reason as to why the mandatory hours became established. Understanding the purpose is the only way we can actually take from the experience.

I had grown up spending much of my free time at my dance studio. The teachers have taught me for countless of hours and I had gained several skills that I couldn’t have learned elsewhere. I realized at one point that I had only been on the receiving end of kindness and hadn’t given anything back. It was then that I decided to volunteer at the studio every Saturday.

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

The aftermath of hurricane Sandy was horrific, however it was also followed by a huge amount of social responsible acts that influenced my life indefinitely. In October of 2012 my community was directly hit by hurricane Sandy which resulted in extreme flooding, fires and wind damage that left a tremendous amount of damage, including concrete sidewalks and streets in rubble; there were holes with half or entire truck’s or car’s buried inside of them. The flood was so bad that we were trapped inside until the water eventually drained into the sewer systems. When the storm and the water surpassed, people panicked; with no phone services, television or radio no one knew how long we would be without resources. Many people broke into flooded stores to get water, canned foods and any undamaged supplies…

Through the students I gained more than just service hours; I gained conscientiousness. It allowed me to grow personally; learning patience, compassion, love, confidence, and responsibility. As much as I was able to teach to the students, the students also taught to me. I love performing, but they made me realize what I love even more and what I want to continue doing for the rest of my life: teaching and helping them start creating a better future. I want to have a positive impact on children, show them they can achieve anything, help them build up their self-esteem and confidence, and show them that they too have an amazing future ahead of…
