This is my first volunteer in this area .as I’m preparing to start my volunteering on Tuesday. There are different emotions and thoughts in my mind the first one is. are they going to accept me the way I look and dress which I have experience? Because these elderly people may never have had close contact or worked with them when they were young. Are they okay with the way I dress what expectation do they have of me? The other thing is how is this going to affect my emotions when I see people who cannot do their basic daily chores and it is not necessary it can be due to diseases which make to not be able to go very small task. I’m hoping to learn as much as I can so I can use that experience in the future also learn the different stage we go through as we age. I will also learn how to …show more content…
They are there instead of being home along while their children are at work or be stuck in a nursing home. They come to this place to socialize and do different activity like bingo, music, exercising etc. I have so far learned that people with severe dementia and not only elderly people go there, there are high school kids with brain retardation who comes there so they are prepared to work. They help with the lunchroom, cleaning and so on for them it is to learn what is like to work and build their self-esteem. I believe the community partner I have pick is going to be excellent in every way. It is not far from where I leave and that is a bonus. As a child, I was raised by my grandmother and my great-grandmother was there so I was very close to her, she used to tell me stories. Not that only I worked as a nursing assistant so I believe it is going to be very easy for me since I have experience working with elderly people. I have high expectations that I will do well and fit in that place. I look forward to go to Agustanacare I believe it will

They enjoy their live helping their grand kids, and they feel worthy. But some of them live in senior home for different reasons, for example, some of them do not have families to take care of them. I really like to be with them, and help in particular, because they need care passionate to feel that they are within the community. Most of the time senior people feel lonely, no one taking care of them, and they think their rule is done in the community. I want to show them how the community cares about them as before, also how they are important to…

When I decided to volunteer at the Del Amo Gardens Care Center, I wasn’t quite sure if I was emotionally ready. In March of 2013, my grandpa suffered a very severe stroke. It caused so much damage that it paralyzed half of his body, so we had to put him in a nursing home. Shortly after starting my volunteering, however, any negativity faded away as I was eager to assist with the activities.…

Early upon entering the College of Social Work I became interested in the homeless population. In my junior year, I took the time to volunteer with the Renaissance Community Center, an organization that provides various services to Homeless individuals in Tallahassee. Volunteering here taught me about people and the effects of interpersonal communication, how the availability of services can aid people during personal crisis, and the limitations of resources and access on a vulnerable population such as the homeless. This experience is valuable to me as it increased my interest in the population and my awareness of how it intersects with values and the purpose of social work.…

Aundria McCadney Reflection Paper #2 (Adams Place) When I found out Adams place were coming to speak I thought they was just going to talk about long-term care just like every other nursing home. The most shocking was to learn that they offer other health services as well like independent living, assisted living, and rehab. Both of the speakers provided some good information about being Health Administrator in the nursing home settings.…

I would like to share with you the beginning of my experience with volunteering at Shalom East. I will be working in the hospice center and visiting with the patients in their last moments of their life. This is not going to be an easy job for me but when I found out about the opportunity I knew it was something I needed to do. I have a large heart and feel compelled to give what I can to perfect strangers in their time of need. I would want someone to do the same for me.…

Sarah Jessica Parker, an American actress, once said, "I developed a really strong work ethic, and I don't take anything for granted". I feel the same thing applies to me 100%. I tend to use my stress to fuel my drive to get things done, on time, and right. However, I am also human and know where I need assistance. From working hard at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC's) nursing program to serving my residents as a certified nurse's assistant at a retirement home, I feel I am an exceptional fit for the DMACC Foundation Scholarship.…

The second thing I wish had been different is that I wish that I had learned more about how to talk about sensitive subjects, when I came back from the session I took a minute to read the chapter in the NIA booklet “Talking with your Older Patient” about sensitive subjects, but I did not seem to find the answers I wanted. When talking with our resident I realized that she had experienced a lot of loss in her life, her son, her grandson, and her sister. Although she played it off like it was not a big deal to her, I wish that I had known how to approach the conversation of asking what happened and what was your favorite memory with this person, instead of just letting her play it off. I think that many of her losses were long ago, so she…

I chose to take this role to learn more about dementia after discovering that a late uncle had the condition which was kept secret due to the stigma associated with the disorder. This position was arguably the most out of my comfort zone leaving me responsible for another human life but working closely with an interdisciplinary team of dietitians, physical therapists, and nurses helped me gain invaluable practical experience and the confidence to help look after those in more vulnerable conditions. Volunteering as a meal companion gave me access to numerous seminars and workshops aimed at better understanding dementia and improving interactions with patients as well as my own knowledge. By being consistent and making proper use of allocated…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…

For my reflective essay I have chosen to look at the challenges of working with older people in a health and human service setting and in particular how this would challenge me to work as an effective practitioner in the discipline of nutrition. In the last five years I have worked and spent time with older adults from different settings, some who are healthy and engaged in all areas of their lives, living independently and contributing to their community. I have also spent time with older adults who are determined to live out their years in their own home despite chronic pain, disease and social isolation and finally I have worked with older adults living in aged care facilities who have multiple conditions, prescribed multiple medications…
