Social Work Internship Analysis

Internships play a big role in a person’s college journey. According to Brigham Young University (BYU) “an internship is a perfect way to put into practice what you’ve learned in the classroom while trying out different areas of the statistics job world” (2015). In other words, internships help you learn by experience giving students the opportunity to discover if that career is really for them or not. Unfortunately, most degrees don’t require students to get an internship until their senior year or simply don’t require one at all. For example, Social Work is a profession which is dedicated to helping people function with their environments. By changing the pedagogy of their majors, students would be more successful in their future and get a degree in a career that they’re really interested in. A perfect way to do this is by requiring all majors to have classes that require volunteering hours every semester and to start their internship programs during sophomore year instead of senior year. That way, if students decide to change their majors after volunteering or doing their internship they won’t have gone through almost all the major requirements before they realize that whatever major their studying is not for them. Especially with Social Work, a profession that requires a lot of understanding about the behavior of others. Not everyone has the knowledge and ability to help others with their problems. Most people barely even know how to solve theirs. The main purpose of a social worker is to make other’s lives easier. Whether is psychologically speaking or just about monetary issues. Every person is unique and has different needs, the only real way to know how to help each and every one of them is through experience. Experience on knowing to talk to them so they feel you’re there to help them and not to cause more problems, and the most important type of experience is the one to actually knowing what to do in order to help them. These are all things that can’t really be learned in class by listening to a teacher’s lecture. And the only way to do is by doing it with the help of volunteering work and internships. By doing this, not only will students actually study the major they’re really interested in. But if everyone is doing what they love, this world will eventually end up being a better world in which everyone is always happy to do what they’re doing.
