I served my time volunteering at a few of the different diversity events located at our University. These events included two of the LGBT Tea Talks, the Fall Hall Concert, and Turn Up Tuesday. All events were exciting, they included a wild array of fun and brings out perspectives from other students, a lot of the events to bring out the creative energy and exotic ideas of others, most importantly they inform students and staff.

The Tea Talks that I attended are events where the speakers discuss and soothe ideas with a complicated scenario, or a topic where most people feel uncomfortable with. What I did at this event was help bake cookies and help set up tables, not

At this event, contestants competed to make the best dish with a limited amount of ingredients using dutch ovens in order to win prizes. I took inventory on ingredients and organized supplies, tabulated sponsor donations, helped make advertising handouts, put prizes in envelopes, and laminated signs for ingredient tables and team stations. Another thing that I helped out with was figuring out how to work the announcer equipment. The only person that previously knew how to work it moved away, so I was given the task of figuring out how it worked and if they could hook it up outside. The staff were nice and didn’t hesitate to help me and answer any questions I had.…

The event I attended for the diversity assignment was called, “Social Innovation in a Digital Context” (SIDC). The event was held October 16 at the PASSHE Center City campus, located at 701 Market St in Philadelphia. This event was a PowerPoint presentation with a question and answer format at the end. For decades, the United States has been described as a “melting pot” of different cultures. As the population of the United States increases, factors such socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic diversity continue to grow as well. Multiculturalism can be seen in all aspects of life, including university education. With increasing minority populations at colleges across the nation, an education in diversity becomes more important. Promoting an education in diversity in university life and cultural courses not only discourages students from developing disrespectful preconceptions but also prepares them for the diverse environment of the modern workplace.…

I think Washburn values diversity because having diversity at a university presents all kinds of thinking and reasoning strategies from different types of students. Also, there are more ways to come up with results and solutions when there is a diverse setting containing students from different backgrounds. In my opinion, I think the most important part of the WU diversity statement is the first sentence that says, “The mission of our diversity initiative is to honor the Washburn University commitment to respect, embrace, enhance and celebrate diversity at all levels of the University and surrounding communities through faculty, staff, student and administrative efforts and community partnerships.” I think this sentence is important because it is stating what the mission of diversity is at Washburn. I support the WU diversity statement because the last sentence states, “Washburn defines diversity broadly to encompass gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation and identity, disability, age, religion and national origin” and this greatly reflects my views on diversity.…

The only community event I have had the opportunity to attend so far was the Front Porch Gathering regarding immigration in our community, specifically about DACA recipients. The event began by a representative of the LCCE introducing two DACA recipients who shared their stories about how DACA has given them opportunities that were once unimaginable. It helped set the scene for how impactful DACA is in the lives our youth in our community. At that point, it was no longer just a piece of obscure government legislation that we hear about on the news; it was living and breathing in front of our very eyes. Even though DACA has never affected me or anyone in my family or friend circle, it now felt personal.…

Following training, I commenced my role as a hands-on-care volunteer at DFCI. I currently provide cancer patients with hand massage as they undergo their infusion. IVs are often placed in various regions of the hand so I learn to adapt to differing circumstances to maximize the care and relaxation each patient receives.…

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, diversity is the condition of having or being of different elements. Many times the word diversity is used in terms of people and cultures. This is the case because no two people are alike, and this holds true for cultures as well. Diversity of an individual encompasses three different areas: invariability, variability, and influence. While invariable characteristics of a person tend to remain the same over one’s lifetime, variable characteristics and environmental influences vary throughout a lifetime.…

Attending a school that emphasizes diversity like the University of California, Los Angeles allowed me to interact with dissimilar people and immerse myself in many cultures different from my own. Through conversations outside of class and attending multiple culture nights, I was able to experience some of the customs, values, and beliefs of other cultures I had never been previously exposed to. However, most of my understanding has come from my service in Dr. Amy Waterman’s lab at the UCLA Transplant Research and Education Center. The research lab aims to reduce racial disparities in transplant. An example of our discoveries during research was results showing that minorities, especially African Americans, are less likely to pursue living…
