Volunteer Hours Short Story

Volunteer Hours Today Jenna and I volunteered at the Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society. We spent three hours walking the dogs and playing with the kittens. At first I was hesitant to spend three hours at the humane society, but the time went by faster than I had assumed. The first place I went in the shelter was the older dog room, and instantly I was taken aback by how many dogs there were. There was this one older dog snuggled up in the back of the kennel, it had the most depressing look on its face and all I wanted to do was hug it but, the manager told us it was sick and instructed us not to touch it. I was a little upset about the sick dog until a wild little dog ran inside and jumped all over me. The manager told us that the dog had been here for quite awhile and that he really needed some play time; he never told us the name so Jenna and I decided to name him Maurice. We spent about an hour running around and playing with the hyper little dog; it was obvious the dog needed attention. It was slightly heart breaking having to put him back in the kennel. …show more content…
As soon as I walked in the cat room I was met with the tinniest black kitten I have ever seen. I picked it up only to realize it and the other kittens it was around, had colds. It was obvious the kittens did not feel well so I did the best I could to give them all attention and make them feel loved. I was so distracted by all the kittens that I ended up staying in the room for almost an hour. I became so attached to one kitten that I text my roommate asking how I would be able to sneak it into my dorm

My response to this scenario is based on my experience with volunteers at the Tyler Texas Corps. At this Corps, volunteers were used in various Corps programs and activities. The Corps relied on the help of these volunteers, however, for all their advantages and benefits there were many challenges and drawbacks. Managing the massive amount of volunteers required much responsibility more than the “Volunteer Coordinator” could handle alone. The challenges with volunteers is that the majority of volunteers are short term or seasonal volunteers.…

Overall, I enjoyed the time I put into this project by voulunteering. While volunteering, I had a couple different jobs to do. These jobs include cat cuddling, dog walking, and play time coordinator for dogs. Cat cuddling, being exactly what it sounds like, was simply spending time with the cats at the shelter. This can mean playing with them, cuddling with them, grooming them, or even just letting them out of their kennel for a little while.…

Ever since I was little I have been involved in 4-H. This program has taught me how to be responsible, organized and a leader by allowing children like myself to be active in their communities. Every year we are required to do a certain amount of voluntary work. I have volunteered at many local events, such as 4-H Fair Clean Up Day, JucFest, Sod Buster and Ethan’s Rodeo. This summer, I was given the privilege to give back to my community in a huge way. Normally, my volunteer opportunities assist a few people or animals, but this opportunity affected an entire village.…

Not only did I thoroughly enjoy every single part of my project, but my eyes were opened to the endless possibilities a career in biology can offer me. If there’s one thing I should have learned by now but haven’t learned yet, it’s balance. By balance I do not mean being able to stand on one foot without falling in a petty amount of seconds, but yes, I should have probably learned that by now also. The type of balance I’m talking about is more time management based. It sounds very cliche, but everybody makes this kind of mistake every once in awhile, I unfortunately make this mistake all the time, but there’s one very memorable time that always will stick out to me. “Please please please,” I begged to my parents.…

If only there would have been more people volunteering, then so much more people could have been helped. And if more people can be help, then the suffering on earth can be ease. The big problem is that everyone is so busy with their personal life that they forget about the importance of helping others. A positive aspect I saw was that those who were already volunteering were really dedicated and kind hearted. I believe they are making a big impact on every person they touched and made it a task to spread their kindness.…
