If it is that they have been in the group several times and they are silent, they need to be challenged as to why they are not participating and while they are in the group, especially if I have already asked in private why they are not participating and there is not excuse to fit their silence. If the group is silent, why, and if my grade depends on their participation and then that’s a problem. I will do my best to be the best group facilitator and utilize the skills I know, and ask open-ended question to allow the client to choose to …show more content…

They would ask why come to group seeking support for something negative in their life, and look for help if they feel as if the group meeting is a form of punishment, as if they are on trial or they are being punished. The voluntary group members are a willing participant for personal growth and recovery, not due to failure to comply with laws, rules and regulations they experienced sometime of penalty because of their inability to comply, like an involuntary group receives some type of penalty or …show more content…
I do not think I would be involved in a group that has no purpose. If the group members attempt to hijack the group, and the topic is not clear, I would not try to solve world peace or world hunger. I would find some common ground to focus on and redirect the group with paraphrasing and move them towards their original purpose. When the problems I face are unclear, and the solutions are certainly not evident to me, I get uncomfortable with not having a clear and concise idea for what to do and where to go for the group to remain intact and not to lose control of the

When starting a group I introduce the group topic and myself, explain and hand out everything needed, and emphasized respect for others during the group, this is how I feel I created the sacred space. Stating some rules of respecting others, not saying negative things if someone is sharing something personal, offer support are a few rules that help create common ground. At Sheppard Pratt, it was important for adolescents to not feel alone and to have their feelings validated. So I frequently asked group members to share what they are working on in the hospital or, if they were comfortable with it, to share what brought them to the hospital; in doing this it helped others realize they are not alone and created common ground between peers. For example if a patient opened up in group that she self harms, this could really help someone else struggling with the same thoughts to go to her and ask what helps them cope with self injurious…

The process consisted of choosing a peer-reviewed article related to trauma-informed practice, then creating a Facilitation Plan around the article and relevant course theory, and finally facilitating a group discussion. As the next step towards the development of our group facilitation skills, we were assigned to write a critical reflection about the experience of facilitating a group discussion. This encourages an environment of sharing, learning, and growing. People are allowed to join and leave as needed and rather than pressure to make beneficial choices there is encouragement and collaboration to do so. When addressing someone with ambivalence about coming I would share that the most difficult part of the process is showing up to the meeting. Once you are there the hardest part is over and now you can relax and see where the process takes you. There was not a specific part of the self-help process that I felt negativity impacted the group members.…
