Volleyball Serve Research Paper

The hypothesis of the experiment is: If the type of serve is float, then passes to the setter will decrease. The idea of the experiment is to have a better understanding and discover which type of volleyball serve is harder to receive. The project is interesting because the sport of volleyball is enjoyed by many people around the world and hope to have a better understanding of the game after the experiment is over. To be able to understand the physics and movement of the ball in volleyball would make this experiment a great one. There are many factors that go into a volleyball serve. There are also some definitions that might be unfamiliar to a person who does not play volleyball. When averaged, the topspin serve had five out of ten serves passed to the setter and the float serve averaged four out of ten passes to the setter. This caused a percent difference of 22.22. Therefore, the hypothesis was supported. The topspin serve is easier to pass because as the ball is served, the ball continues spinning downward onto the opponent's court. The ball spins forward but does not move from side to side. The topspin serve then dips quickly as it goes over the net, from the forward spin produced from the server snapping their wrist and following through. The float serve, however, does move from side to side. As a float serve is served, the ball has no spin on it. But, the ball itself moves back and forth through the air. Unlike the topspin serve, the float serve stays in the air longer because there is no spin on the ball. Also, the ball stays in the air longer because the server does not snap their wrist or follow through.
