The Journey Working hard and putting in the effort actually gets you somewhere. I learned that throughout the past years playing volleyball. I looked back on the years that I played high school volleyball and I can see a huge difference in the way I play now.
It all started when I was in eighth grade. I was at high school tryouts as a middle schooler and I was so nervous that my body was shaking from my head to my toes. Once I started competing, my jitters died down. I participated in a lot of drills at first and then we all played a couple games at the end. Tryouts lasted three days. When tryouts were over, I went home and my shirt was not even drenched in sweat. I felt like I did not give …show more content…
I was the starting Libero initially for the JV team until the unimaginable happened. I broke my finger and was not able to play for a month. Obviously, I lost my spot as the starting Libero due to this injury. Even though I could not fully play, I would still persuade the coaches to let me play a little bit in practice. The tryouts lasted three days again. This time it was in an extremely hot and humid gymnasium. It was so hot and humid that when I dove for a ball, I stuck to the floor like a housefly sticks to flypaper. Normally, I slide across the gym floor like a hockey puck slides across the ice. I put in a hundred percent effort at tryouts and when we were done, my shirt was soaked in sweat. It was so wet that it was like I could wring out a whole lake with my drenched shirt. I challenged myself to work even harder and do better than last year and I improved my status again. I made the Varsity team as a freshmen. Although I was not a starter, I did get a few opportunities to play in the games which was a big accomplishment to me. During the season one of the starters got hurt, so I was a starter for like three games. I proved myself on the court that I was a competitor and deserved to be a starter.
This year, I wanted to be a starter and not just sit on the cold, depressing, dark bench. I worked extra hard by going to camps and doing drills. In the drills I had to run down balls and it felt as if I were running forever. My hard work and enthusiasm earned a position on the Varsity team again. Now, I earned the starting Libero position as a sophomore, even beating out a senior for this
