My identity was formed the second I signed up for YMCA volleyball in third grade. From my first game to the games occurring now, volleyball has been my main interest, my best talent, and the biggest contributing factor to my identity. When I was little I had significant problems with my self-confidence. I was the tallest girl in my grade which made me feel like a monster compared to my friends and my appearance before braces only contributed to my diffedence. When I came across volleyball I finally felt as if I was naturally good at something, and as a result my confidence began to grow. In practice I would give tremendous effort so that I could be the absolute best. People then started to associate my name with volleyball. As the years went on and I advanced to middle school volleyball, I aspired to be the captain and win the volleyball MVP award by the end of the season. Because of my lofty goals for myself, I put in even more work. Then the people knew me not just for being a great volleyball player, but for my dedication to succeed in anything I put my mind to. I wasn’t about to let this stereotype define me, so I strove to invalidate it. Since I joined volleyball two years after most of my peers, I was put on the “B-team” throughout junior high.…

I again emphasized that we were specifically looking at improving our own skills. We set goals for Volleyball, using the SMART acronym, allowing students to share where they are at now with a particular skill and where they would like to end up. We will reflect on how that experience went at the end. During activities, students could self identify with whether they felt ‘Spicy’, ‘Medium’, or ‘Mild’. We together celebrated successes for all the various groups and many students moved themselves amongst the categorization depending on the day or…
