A full-size, technologically advanced SUV points to an upcoming Volkswagen product.

Make no mistake about it: the Volkswagen T-Prime Concept GTE SUV currently on display at an auto show in China is giving the world a strong indication of an upcoming Volkswagen product, in particular a full-size SUV.

What isn’t known is whether the engineering and high-tech features present in the T-Prime Concept will carry over to the production model. What seems assured is that we’ll find an overall design based largely on the concept becoming a production reality.

The proposed SUV puts Volkswagen in a segment occupied by its peers, including the Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder, Buick Enclave, Dodge Durango, Toyota Highlander, GMC Acadia, and the Honda Pilot. Just as each competitor offers standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive with seating for seven, the T-Prime Concept is a match, although in this case all-wheel drive is standard.

Exterior Design and Attributes

The T-Prime Concept offers a long and bold silhouette. From the front is a distinct chrome radiator grille extending across the full width of the front fascia, seamlessly integrating the LED headlights.

Along its sides, multiple upper and lower character lines along with distinctive body sculpting is present. Flared wheel wells, chrome touches, and a tapered roof line provide a look that is at once elegant as it is sporty. From the rear, an integrated liftgate spoiler, wraparound combination lamps, body sculpting, and a diffuser are evident. If Volkswagen is aiming to reach GMC Acadia Denali customers, the stylish look is already there.

The only color that the Model T came in was black because black paint dried the fastest (McCollum). In addition to the car’s being inexpensive, people could depend on the Model T as it was a very durable automobile (McCollum). Although it was dependable, the Model T was not easy to control since it “had no gearshift […and] its two speeds and reverse were controlled by means of three foot pedals” (Ralph Stein qtd. in McCollum).…
