Voice Majors Recital

On Monday, I had the pleasure of attending the Voice Majors Recital. This was the first concert/recital that I have attended at Queens College. I walked into the concert hall expecting to see a performance by a large choir. However, I was pleasantly surprised when the first performer walked onto the stage by herself. When the pianist started playing, I looked into the program and noticed the first song was in Italian. Katerina Hadjipavlis, the soprano soloist, began to and it was amazing! I was not expecting her to be singing opera. Like the other soloist, you could really see the passion on her face. That was one of the things that I really enjoyed regarding the performances. I could clearly see the passion and dedication that was put into

On the surface, one might not think that the great Italian opera La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi and the acclaimed indie group Dinosaur Jr. have much in common. One concert, for instance, took place in an intimate performing arts center to an attentive and quietly reverent audience while the other in a loud, rough-and-tumble rock venue to a lively and informal audience. Indeed, there may appear to be no similarities between the effortlessly skilled classical stylings of the UNT College of Music and the deliberately ramshackle indie sound of Dinosaur Jr. However, with these two concerts, we see Christopher Small’s concept of “musicking” in full effect and, critically, two different forms of the same musical elitism.…

I appreciated the effort and music the mariachi group gave in their performance. I noticed how the trumpet usually took the main role while the violins supported the trumpets voice, usually by pizzicato. The guitar and guitarrón were mainly the background music that played the same rhythm over and over. It made me realize the beauty of…

Fredi Pritchett Music 110-08B December 2, 106 J.S. Bach Mass in B Minor On November 5, 2016, I attended the J.S. Bach Mass in B Minor music concert at Converse College, featuring a performance by the Spartanburg Festival Chorus. I enjoyed the musical selections performed by the chorus and saw a few familiar faces of some of my classmates at the concert as well. The venue of the concert was very nice and a lot of older people attended the concert.…

It was the night of September 28th and I could not sleep. I was so nervous because the next morning I had my audition for North Carolina High-School Honors Choir. Although I practiced for weeks and sang for my chorus teacher countless times, I never knew of what could have happened in my five minute audition. I would have to warm up and sing an excerpt of the audition piece “Sing Ye to the Lord.” Then I would have 60 seconds to study an 8-measure line of sight singing.…

I’m sitting alone in the front pew of the University of Virginia Chapel on a cold December night. In front of me there is a tall metal stand with a set of bongos perched precariously atop. Behind me sits the entire crowd of the sold out Virginia Women’s Chorus Candlelight Concert. When I arrived in Charlottesville months earlier, I could have never expected to be here. I have just finished performing a piece with the chorus minutes earlier, when a member of the chorus steps forward and addresses the audience to explain and introduce the next piece.…

Concert Report Two The concert performance given live that I have attended on Thursday April 20th, 2017 was an organ licentiate recital by Ian Guenette. It was held at the Redpath Hall, a building located on McTavish street. The Redpath Hall was first dedicated for a library building, but is now taken charge by the Schulich School of Music. The Hall is very charming with its high selling that contains thick dark brown carved wodden beams that covers the intire ceiling and gives warmth to the room.…

A magnificent rounded auditorium shining with golden adornments, a ceiling that made me crane my neck to fully appreciate its vastness, and over 2,500 people in five tiers of seating truly took my breath away. Even so, the setting of Carnegie Hall couldn’t compare to the astonishment I felt when I sang there. In 2014, my concert choir was selected to be part of a 200 voice choir in a PERFORMING a Christmas concert at Carnegie Hall. We received our composition around a month before the December concert, and honestly, it didn’t seem to be anything special. We were part of a background choir after all.…

Extra Credit On September 30th I attended my second SWIC Music Recital at the Schmidt Art Center. The venue for the afternoon recital was held in the same gallery room as my first experience. The rooms plain walls were adorned with art of varying mediums, in the front of the hall sat a white grand piano on parquet floors, played by Professor Gail Long, the only accompaniment for the day’s performers. This recital difference from the first event was rather than professors performing for the students it was students playing for a group of 50 of their peers and professors.…

I learned a lot about the choreographers in the performance by the way they presented themselves. Presentation means a lot and the way they proceeded was professional. Best Concert Reflection

I feel that this concert has been my best concert since my arrival at the University for a variety of reasons. The primary reason I enjoy being in choir and singing is the rewarding feelings I have when we finally are able to present to the audience what we have worked so hard towards the entire semester. What many people who don 't participate in a choral ensemble is the amount of work in class and outside of class that we put in as singers into our work. It 's a long-term process of trying again and again until we get it right and ultimately being satisfied with whatever we end up presented at the end of the night. Music for me is an escape from the hectic and sometimes stressful reality of school and work; being able to come to a class that allows me a safe environment to freely express myself and relax for a couple hours has been one of the most exciting parts of this class and of the concert.…
