“O my friend, my kind friend,/ Are you still there for me, then,/ Reaching out from your steady hold/ To touch my disfigured heart?/ Faithful to the end/ Now I am blind,/ Attending me patiently,/ Still the necessary witness./ You’re there, I know. That familiar voice/ Comes through all my darkness./ It’s you, my friend” (Sophocles 1441-1450). The Chorus in Oedipus Rex consists of Theban elders. In Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, the Chorus effectively fulfills its function as impartial advisors by giving logical and discreet advice to main characters such as Oedipus, without the hindrance of emotion. In Oedipus the King, the eponymous character and Creon refer to a creature they encounter prior to the events of the play—the sphinx. The creature hails from Egyptian mythology, yet appears in a Greek tragedy. Unlike her place in Egyptian mythology, she is a conniving, female monster who terrorizes the people of Thebes. Before the play begins, Oedipus became the king of Thebes and married Jocasta because he defeated her by solving her riddle. In addition, she prevented Creon from discovering Laius’ murderer.…

My favorite Myth is Oedipus the Theban. I like this story because it shows that a normal human cannot avoid fate, and pride is often our downfall. Sometimes people believe they can take control of their fate and choose their own destinies. They think that they are smart enough to deceive fate into doing what they want. This myth shows people can not belittle fate into letting them choose what happens to them.…

Jocasta Confusion: Should We Pity Or Loathe Her? Throughout history femininity has been looked down upon, while masculinity has been praised. Even in today’s world, women are blamed for things that aren’t their fault, while men are not held accountable for their wrongdoings. Oedipus as a leader I believe that after reading about what Oedipus had to deal with as a leader, then what Creon had to deal with as a leader, that Oedipus was a far better leader because of his temperament, his accountability, and how he had far greater problems compared to Creon. First we’ll talk about his temperament, I will say that they both had pretty bad tempers in their own way. How they acted on their temperament would be totally different.…

In the story of Oedipus, there are several examples that show man’s relationship with the truth. The oracle predicts the truth about the future of Laius, Jocasta, and Oedipus. Killing his father and marrying his mother are both examples of what the oracle predicted about them. In Oedipus Rex, Sophocles shows that, in the case of finding truth, if a man starts in search for the truth, he must find the whole truth, but if a man never starts in search for the truth, he can stay ignorant of the truth. The story of Oedipus shows that the better of the two is staying ignorant of the truth.…
