When choosing to write a letter, send an email, or write an essay, first you have to determine your purpose for writing. Second, you have to think about the content; furthermore, what information is needed, what word choices are appropriate, and lastly, who you are writing to will determine the vocabulary needed and the level of professionalism.
I feel all three items are important to consider whenever I write. Paying attention or focusing on the audience helps me write to their understanding. The purpose for my writing is also important and needed; for instance, if I am sending a birthday card to my nephew I would not use the same vocabulary for him that I would for my direct supervisor.
