A Vlasic pickle jar will be the manufactured product discussed. The pickles found in Vlasic pickle jars are grown in Mount Pleasant and Kalamazoo, Michigan. They are then processed in Imlay City. The jars themselves are primarily made of glass, which is completely recyclable. Although, data from a number of sources has found that glass jars are simply not being recycled enough. In addition to this, glass is fairly inexpensive in its value, resulting in recycling centers losing money from the costs of melting, mixing, and blowing the recycled glass. Unfortunately, this discourages many individuals from recycling glass, in spite of its proven benefits to the environment. Clearly, this is an issue that needs to be addressed as glass is one of the most abundant materials we have.

Glass jars are formed in processing plants. The process typically begins with melting of batches of materials. The materials are melted in a furnace at an astonishingly high temperature. After the heating of the batch, the glass is then blown. This results in the formation of the glass jar’s shape. There are two ways that glass is blown known as Blow and Blow, and Press and Blow. Both of these methods are widely used and are somewhat similar. In the Blow and Blow method, the glass is blown by high pressure compressed air. While in the Press and Blow method, the glass is pressed by a metal tube that forms a round shape in the glass. The press and blow method is utilized more often in the creation of glass bottles rather than glass jars. In both cases, the process is the same. Finally, after the formation of the glass jars is complete, the jars are then cooled, inspected, and
