Vladek and Anja sent him with Uncle Persis in 1943 in order to protect him because they believe he will be safer here, he travels with Anja's sister named Tosha, her daughter Bibbi; and Vladek's niece Lonia. But soon after, the town in which they were staying, Zawiercie, gets wiped out by the Nazis and in order to avoid being taken to the gas chambers, Tosha poisons herself, Richieu and Bibbi and Lonia.
