Vlad III was born in Sighisoara, a Transylvanian city, in 1431. The house where Vlad was born in is still built and can be visited. He grew up in Tirgoviste and was raised by his mom, Princess Cneajna. She made sure that Vlad and his brothers went to Church and received communion from the monks. Vlad’s father made sure that Vlad and his brothers grew up to become fierce warriors. Vlad and his older brother Mircea were the toughest of Vlad Dracul’s sons. He would later be called, “Radu the Handsome.” When Vlad was thirteen and his younger brother Radu were nine, they were held captive by Sultan Murad II. Sultan Murad II tricked Vlad’s father into going to a meeting which was believed to be a truce between the Turks and the Hungarians. Vlad Dracul brought two of his sons, Vlad III and Radu to the meeting as well. Upon arriving, all of them were arrested. Vlad Dracul was released by the court; however, because of the standards set by the Turkish court, he had to leave his two sons behind. Murad believed that if he had Vlad Dracul’s sons, it would keep him from carrying out attacks on the Turks. Soon after, Vlad and Radu were moved to Adrianople. While there, they were able to roam the city but were constantly watched. They were put in dungeons when Murad II found out that Europeans were starting another crusade against the Turks. Archaeologists have discovered where they believe Vlad and his brother were kept during their captivity. They think Vlad and Radu were held in Turkey’s Tokat Castle. When people think of the infamous Wallachian ruler Vlad III Drăculea, they think of the famous literary monster of nightmares, Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula. Dracula, who has appeared in many media outlets from the big screen of Hollywood to the bright lights of Broadway, is thought by many to have been inspired by the Wallachian Voivode that is better known as Vlad the Impaler. There is, however, little evidence that backs this assumption. In fact, there is actually a lot of evidence that refutes the idea that Stoker drew his inspiration for the Count from Vlad the Impaler, including evidence from Count Dracula himself in Dracula. Vlad the Impaler is not Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula.…

Leo Tolstoy’s novel War and Peace deeply illustrates the lives of many characters. A compelling novel, Tolstoy maintains the characters’ verisimilitude through the use of body language and conflicts. The lives of Prince Andrei and Pierre -- two foil characters -- parallel each other as they embark on their journey towards a deeper self-understanding. Through the use of details, interpersonal and intrapersonal conflicts, and the subtle juxtaposition of Prince Andrei and Pierre, Leo Tolstoy is able to effectively depict in War and Peace the profound deepening of their self-understanding.…

Following psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder, I believe that a good way to explain Vlad Dracula’s violent behavior is through social learning theory. Social Learning Theory is the belief that, learning is a cognitive process that occurs through of social contexts, either through observation or instruction, experienced as an adolescent. As I described earlier in this paper, at the age of, either 12 or 13, Dracula, along with his brother Ruda, were both sent to be captives of the Turks as a deal made by their father, Dracul, in order to maintain good relations with the Turks (pg 36). Moreover, while his brother gave in to the Sultan and was released from his captivity to become his protégé, Dracula remained in captivity, which “had…

The reader experiences the actions in the novel on the basis of diaries, letters and journals written by the characters Jonathan Harker, Mina Harker, Lucy Westenra, Van Helsing and Dr. Seward. No entries are written by count Dracula, he is portrayed by all the other characters. Dracula is the inspiration to many film and other vampire characters. It is said that Stoker read the story about a Rumanian price named Vlad Tepes who ruled during the 1400 century, and was inspired to write Dracula. Sampson and Larsdotter (2001, march 13) writes in an article in Popular History that Vlad Tepes was known as Dracula, which came from his father Vlad Dracul (Vlad the devil).…
