Vitamin Supplements: Helpful Or Harmful?

It is easy to find many different types of vitamin pills and nutrition supplements in grocery stores and pharmacies. According to the authors of Eat for Life, Woteki and Thomoas, “About 45 percent of the adult men and 55 percent of the adult women in the United States take a vitamin or mineral supplement either regularly or occasionally” (119). People may think that taking dietary supplements can increase their overall health, so they start taking multivitamins or specific vitamin pills such as Vitamin C, Vitamin B, or Omega 3 without understanding the supplements they are consuming. However, taking vitamin supplements can actually be risky to people’s health. According to Healthy Eating Every Day, some supplements can lead to symptoms which can severely affect surgery such as high bleeding or high blood pressure. As a result of taking Coumadin, Ginkgo biloba, aspirin, or Vitamin E –which can thin one’s blood— the risk of internal bleeding or excessive bleeding can increase. Therefore, if a person is taking any kind of vitamin supplements it is necessary to talk with a doctor before surgery so that a possible medical accident or interruption during the surgery can be prevented (Carpenter and Finley 148). Furthermore, overdosing on vitamins can lead people to get sick. Too much Vitamin A can damage the liver, and excessive Vitamin E increases the risk for a stroke (Donatelle and Ketcham 214). Therefore, the instruction from the doctor is necessary before people take the vitamin supplements because supplements can be hazardous to their …show more content…
Certain groups of individuals need to take different supplements, so people should know what kind of vitamin they need and whether the vitamin they are taking is necessary or not. For example, older adults are encouraged to take a supplement of Vitamin D and Calcium to reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is “a disease characterized by low bone mass, deterioration of bone tissue, and increase[d] fracture risk, which is becoming more prevalent among older populations” (Donatelle and Ketcham 265). Women who are pregnant or might become pregnant need to take supplements of folic acid to reduce the risk of birth defects. They also need to avoid taking Vitamin A which can lead to spontaneous abortion and birth defects of fetuses. Strict vegetarians should take a Vitamin B12 supplement to prevent anemia, which can result from the lack of meat sources in their diet (Carpenter and Carrie 146-147). Different person has a different characteristic, so not every person can take the same vitamin
