The purpose of this lab is to test our own lung function by calculating the Vital Capacity, in order to do so we had to find the Tidal Capacity, which is the total volume that is inhaled or exhaled in a single respiratory cycle at rest, Inspiratory Reserve Volume, the volume exhaled in a forced inhalation beyond inhaled Tidal Volume, and Expiratory Reserve Volume, which is the volume which can be exhaled in a forced exhalation beyond exhaled Tidal Volume. These three terms are used to calculate the Vital capacity, which is the Tidal Volume plus Inspiratory Reserve Volume plus Expiratory Reserve Volume. In addition we had to calculate our percent predicted VC by: Actual VC /predicted multiplied by 100. Our predicted is found on …show more content…
The volumes that tend to be the most difficult for Asthmatic are the VC and ERV because it is usually more difficult to exhale because exhaling is a passive process due to the elastic recoil of stretched tissues. The more intense an Asthmatics allergies are, the lower their VC will usually be.
2. Discuss how emphysema might affect a patient’s vital capacity. State which volume (s) are most likely to be affected and why.
With emphysema there is progressive degeneration and destruction of the alveoli. Alveoli are terminal sacs at the end of the airways where the exchange of gases occurs. Smaller alveolar sacs merge into much larger space and tend to lose total surface area and make it difficult for gas exchange and a forced exhalation to occur. Similarly to Asthma, VC and ERV are the most difficult because they require a higher pressure of a forced exhale.
3. Explain why an individual who exercises regularly has a higher vital capacity.
Individuals who exercise regularly, usually have a higher vital capacity because the muscles require more oxygen when they are very active which requires the lungs to take in more oxygen, this is because the diaphragm muscles are increasing in strength. The more regular exercise you do, the more the lungs need to expand in order to take in the extra oxygen that they
