Steinbeck uses a great deal of descriptive words throughout the novel. He describes the scenery and the characters’ reaction to something in great detail. As a result, the readers get pulled into the story. An example of Steinbeck’s descriptive language is: “One end of the great barn was piled high with new hay and over the pile hung the four-taloned Jackson fork suspended from its pulley.” (pg. 82). Steinbeck draws a picture of a barn with hay at one end and a fork over that stack of hay in the readers’ head.
